BUFFALO, N.Y. –
Andra Savage had a record-setting night Wednesday in downtown Buffalo, scoring a program record eight goals to break the single-season goals and points record in the same night as Niagara erased an early 5-1 deficit to earn the win 16-12 over Canisius in MAAC women's lacrosse action from the Demske Sports Complex.
Lois Garlow added four goals and an assist in the win for a total of five points, followed by five assists and one goal from
Riley Latray, two tallies from
Lexi Braniecki and another from
Rachel Crane.
Sydney Huhtala led Niagara (13-3, 6-2 MAAC) with four ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Savage tallied a team-best five draw controls.
Katie Ling entered the game in the first quarter and went on to make four saves in the win.
Maddie Fitzgerald led Canisius with five goals, followed by Paige Stachura with four and Caroline Netti with three. Stachura finished with 11 draws, while Jill Galanti had four ground ablls and Catherine Wall and Stachura each had two caused turnovers.
How it Happened
Niagara found themselves in a 5-1 hole 9:48 into the first quarter, before the offense came alive, scoring four-straight goals, including three from Savage over the next eight minutes of game play to tie the game at five-all.
After Canisius took an 8-5 lead Niagara responded with three unanswered of its own, two from Savage and the equalizer from the stick of Braniecki.
From there neither team would take more than a one goal advantage as the game saw four lead changes and four ties through a majority of the third before Braniecki found the back of the net with less than half a minute left in third to give Niagara a 13-12 lead.
Niagara would never relinquish the lead to Canisius in the fourth, in-fact, the Purple Eagles didn't surrender a goal over the final 17:11 of game action, while scoring three in the final stanza to give the game its 16-12 final.
