Charlotte, N.C.—The Niagara baseball team fell 11-3 on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three game series with the Queens Royals.
How it Happened
Queens took an early lead in the bottom of first inning as they homered on the first pitch they saw to take a 1-0 lead.
Both teams were then held off the board until the bottom of the fourth inning. The Royals scored a pair of runs to take a 3-0 lead and then make it 4-0 on a squeeze play.
In the top of the fifth Brady Desjardins opened the winning with a walk which was followed by Nate Milk being hit by a pitch. Nick Groves then walked to load the bases with no outs. Kelly Corl and Eric Rataczek then both reached out fielder's choices to allow a pair of runs to score for the Purple Eagles. Niagara cut the Queens lead to 4-2 but could not do anymore damage in the frame.
Queens answered right back in the bottom of the fifth as they scored three runs to make it 7-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Queens hit a three run homer to make it a 10-2 game.
Niagara scored their third run of the game in the top of the ninth as Jake Hutchins drove in Tommy Takayoshi with a groundout.
Niagara Notes
· Groves drew his third walk of the season and extended his on base streak to 26 games dating back to last season.
· Gavin Schrader and Takayoshi both had a hit in the game.
· Liam Reynolds pitched three scoreless innings out of the pen. He allowed just two hits while walking one. He notched two strikeouts along with six flyouts.
· Desjardins had a team high four assists while also having four putouts.
