Purple Eagles Defeat Canisius

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. — The Niagara Purple Eagles volleyball team continued their strong start in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play, defeating the Canisius Golden Griffins 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-21) on Wednesday night at the Gallagher Center.
 
How it Happened
Niagara (7-7, 3-0 MAAC) overcame a slow start, dropping the first set before rallying to win three straight and maintain their perfect conference record.
 
Kinga Wronska led the Purple Eagles' offense with a match-high 17 kills, while Laryssa Imbuzeiro contributed a well-rounded performance with eight kills, and 10 blocks.
 
Defensively, Bella Peroni anchored Niagara's back row with an impressive 31 digs. Setter Kylie Blessing orchestrated the offense with 24 assists, including eight in set two to help Niagara even the contest at one set apiece.
 
The Purple Eagles' comeback was fueled by improved hitting efficiency, culminating in a .180 attack percentage in the decisive fourth set, including set-high percentages of .308 from Wronska and Liana Tolliver. Wronska led NU with six kills in the final set.
 
Niagara Notes
• Wednesday marked the 84th meeting all-time between Niagara and Canisius with the Purple Eagles evening the series at 42 wins apiece.
• Niagara has started 3-0 in MAAC play for the first time since 2021 when it also started league play with three-straight wins.
• The Purple and White have won three-straight against Canisius.
• Peroni's 31 digs is a career-high for the senior libero.
• Wronska had a season-high 17 kills.
• Imbuzeiro's matched her career-high with 10 blocks.  
• Blessing has recorded 20 or more assists in four games this season, setting a season-high 24 against the Griffs.

Niagara will travel to New Jersey for its first conference road matches of the season, taking on Saint Peter's and Rider on Saturday and Sunday, respectively on Oct. 5 and Oct. 6.
