RIVERDALE, N.Y. — Manhattan edged out Niagara 1-0 in a tightly contested Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer match Saturday at Gaelic Park.
The game remained scoreless until the 68th minute when Manhattan's Kaylee Stowell found the back of the net, assisted by Arancha Antunes. This proved to be the decisive goal of the match.
Niagara (5-5-2, 0-1-1 MAAC) outshot Manhattan (7-4-2, 2-2-2 MAAC) 16-9, with
Emma Bough leading the Purple Eagles' attack with eight shots, three on target. However, Manhattan goalkeeper Margaret Brunk made six saves to preserve the clean sheet.
The Purple Eagles faced adversity in the second half when
Delta Barber received a red card in the 66th minute, forcing Niagara to play with 10 players for the remainder of the match.
Niagara's
Maddie Crosbie made three saves in goal but couldn't prevent Stowell's game-winner.
The match saw a total of three yellow cards issued to Niagara players: Barber, Bough, and
Baillie Colling.
Despite the loss, Niagara demonstrated a strong offensive presence, particularly in the first half with 10 shots. However, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities, including two shots that hit the woodwork.
