Purple Eagles Earn Series Win In Convincing Fashion

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara baseball team earned a weekend series win over the Marist Red Foxes on Sunday at a wet Bobo Field. Despite Marist taking an early lead Niagara won 13-7 to notched their 20th win of the season.
Game Recap
  • Marist scored runs in each of their first three at bats and led 4-0 after two and a half innings.
  • In the bottom of the third inning, Brady Desjardins doubled to right center with one out, he then moved to third base on a passed ball. Nick Groves had a productive groundout to shortstop that brought Desjardins home for the first Niagara run. Kelly Corl then started a two out rally with a bunt single to keep the inning alive. Cole Tucker reached on an error to put runners on first and second with two outs. After a mound visit, Vincent Mauro homered on the first pitch he saw to even the game at four.
  • The Red Foxes responded in the top of the fourth inning with three runs to take a 7-4 lead.
  • Josh Marchese, Desjardins, and Groves drew three straight walks to open the bottom of the fourth inning. After a pitching change, Marchese hurried home on a passed ball to cut the Marist lead to 7-5. With first base open, Corl was hit by a pitch to load the bases again. Tucker then earned an RBOI the hard way as he was hit by the first pitch that he saw to make it a one run game. After a strikeout, Max Giordano blasted his 14th homer of the season and his first grand slam of the season to give Niagara a 10-7 lead.
  • Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. Matt Ward opened the inning with a double to right center which was followed by a Cole O'Connor single to put runners on the corners. After a strikeout, the Purple Eagles played small ball. Desjardins laid a bunt down the first baseline that brought Ward home while moving O'Connor to second. Five pitches later, Groves singled up the middle and drove in O'Connor from second to make it 12-7 Niagara. With Corl at the plate, Groves swiped second with two outs to get into scoring position. On a 3-2 pitch, Corl pulled a pitch to right field for a single that drive in Groves for the 13th run of the afternoon.
  • Zach Cameron came in the top of the seventh and shut the Red Foxes down and secured the Niagara win. Cameron went three innings while now allowing a hit and struckout six while picking up his eighth save of the season.
Niagara Notes
  • Steven Hospital picked up his fifth win of the season as he went two scoreless innings in relief. He did not walk a batter or give up a hit as he struck out three.
  • Eight of the nine starters notched a hit with Ward, Corl, and O'Connor each having two hits.
  • Six Niagara hitters had at least one RBI which includes each of the top five hitters in the Niagara lineup. Giordano had a game high four RBIs while Mauro had three.
  • Niagara drew 11 walks with Groves, Mauro, Giordano, and Marchese each earning two.
  • Groves picked up his 50th walk of his freshman season and has already beat the previous single season record by 12 with seven regular season games remaining.
  • This season Niagara is now 17-0 when leading after six innings, 16-0 when leading after seven, and 17-0 when leading after eight innings.
  • The Purple Eagles are also 11-2 when scoring more than 10 runs.

  • Niagara hosts Canisius in its final non-conference game of the season before heading on the road to Iona for its final MAAC road weekend. The Griffs come to Bobo Field on Tuesday with first pitch slated for 4 PM.
