Purple Eagles Tie Griffs For First Time In Series History

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara baseball team closed out non-conference play on Tuesday evening as they hosted Canisius for a non-conference game at Bobo Field. After 11 innings the game was called due to darkness with the game tied at eight. The game will not resumed and will result in a tie.
Game Recap
  • Both teams were held off the board in the first three innings while each team each had just one hit. Both teams had a hit in the first inning.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Canisius brought in a new pitcher to open the inning. Vincent Mauro welcomed the new pitcher with a solo homer on a 3-2 pitch to open the scoring. After the homer, Max Giordano was hit by a pitch. Two pitches later, Cameron Moore singled to right field to put runners on first and second. After a fielder's choice runners were on the corners for Josh Marchese. On the first pitch he saw, Marchese blasted a no-doubt homer to right field to make it a 4-0 game.
  • Canisius scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at four.
  • In the top of the seventh inning, Canisius took a 5-4 lead on a bases loaded walk.
  • Niagara took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh. Kelly Corl drew a walk to lead off the inning and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Now with one out in the inning, Mauro stepped back to the plate. On another 3-2 pitch Mauro homered to right center give Niagara a 6-5 lead.
  • The Griffs tied the game once again in the eighth as they manufactured a run with no hits.
  • The Purple Eagles once again responded in the bottom half of the inning. With runners on first and third after a pair of Griff errors, Corl pulled a 2-1 pitch through the left side to drive in Wyatt Palmer from second and gave Niagara a 7-6 lead.
  • Down to their final out in the top of the ninth inning, Canisius tied the game at seven with a double.
  • Neither team scored until the 11th inning. After a leadoff walk and an error, Canisius scored on a sacrifice fly. Niagara limited the damage in the inning and allowed just one run.
  • Mauro's big day continued in the 11th as he opened the inning with a double, he moved to third on a wild pitch. Brady Desjardins walked to put the tying run on third and the winning run on first. After a pair of outs, Palmer stepped to the plate. On a 2-0 pitched he singled to right field to tie the game and put runners on first and second. Nick Groves then walked to load the bases but Niagara stranded the winning run at third.
Niagara Notes
  • It is the first time in 227 matchups between Niagara and Canisius that the teams have tied.
  • It is just the fourth tie of Head Coach Rob McCoy's career as the skipper of the Purple Eagles. The last time Niagara tied a team was in the 2016 season when they tied St. Bonaventure 1-1 in nine innings. All of the games tied in McCoy's tenure has been the second game of a doubleheader.
  • The last time Niagara tied a stand-alone game was in the 1998 season when they tied Lynn 9-9 to open the season. The head coach at the time was Jim Mauro, the father of current Purple Eagle Vincent Mauro.
  • Preston Prince started on the mound and went three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. He struck out two and forced five flyouts.
  • Liam Reynolds was the first Purple Eagle out of the pen, he went two inning and did not allow a hit. He struck out one in the outing.
  • Tommy Bednarski was the final pitcher for Niagara and went 2.1 innings while giving up one run on two hits, he struck out a pair.
  • Both Corl and Mauro led the way as they each had three hits.
  • Mauro and Marchese each had three RBI while Palmer and Corl each had one RBI.
  • Niagara drew 10 walks with 10 Purple Eagles each drawing a walk.
  • The Purple Eagles close out non-conference play with a record of 10-10-1.
