Pitching Leads The Way In Senior Day Win For Niagara

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara baseball team closed out the regular season on Saturday in a wet and rainy day at Bobo Field. Niagara secured its second weekend sweep of the season as they defeated Mount St. Mary's 5-2.
Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles opened the scoring in the opening inning. Nick Groves opened the game with a triple to left center on a 2-2 pitch. After the leadoff triple, Nate Milk reached on an infield single which drove in Milk from third.
  • In the bottom of the third inning, Nick Groves walked to open the inning but was thrown out attempting to steal second. Milk was then hit by a pitch on a 2-1 pitch to put a runner on, Milk then swiped second back. With Milk on second, Cole O'Connor was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. With Max Giordano at the plate, the game entered a 20 minute rain delay. After the game resumed, the Purple Eagles pulled off a double steal. The throw to third got away from the third basemen that allowed Milk to score and moved O'Connor to third. Matt Ward then singled off the right field wall to drive in O'Connor from third to make it 3-0.
  • Mount responded in the top of the fourth inning as they hit a two run home run to make it a one run game.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning with one out, freshman catcher Cameron Moore blasted his first career home run down the left field line. The solo homer gave Niagara a 4-2 lead.
  • Neither team scored again until the eighth inning. In the bottom of the inning, with two out Brady Desjardins hit his second homer of the season to extend the lead to three.
  • Niagara closed out Mount in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.
Niagara Notes
  • Brady Kobitowich started on the mound for Niagara and earned his sixth win of the season. He pitched three innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three.
  • Ryan Minckler pitched one inning while allowed two runs on two hits, he struck out one.
  • Tommy Bednarksi pitched one inning out of the pen, he allowed just one hit while striking out one batter.
  • Cal Theal pitched a scoreless sixth inning, while allowing one hit, he also struck out one.
  • In the seventh inning, Liam Reynolds pitched a clean inning as he struck out two and did not allow a hit.
  • Oliver Barkal made his Bobo Field debut as he pitched a scoreless eighth inning as he struckout one batter.
  • Adam Smith earned the save in the ninth inning as he did not allow a hit.
  • Milk was the lone Purple Eagle with two hits while seven Purple Eagles had hits. Milk also stole three bases in the game.
  • Niagara allowed just five hits in the game, it is just the fourth game this season Niagara allowed five or less hits, they are 4-0 in those games. They outscored their opponents 37-8 in the four games.
  • Giordano finished the regular season with the third best batting average in the MAAC at .375. He was third in the MAAC in on-base percentage at .448.
  • Groves is second in the MAAC in on-base percentage at .507. He drew 54 walks in the regular season which led the MAAC. He is just two walks away from tying the MAAC record.
  • Niagara finishes the regular season 24-20-1, it is the first time they have finished the regular season over .500 since the 2006 season when they went 26-25 in the regular season and 28-26 overall.

  • The Purple Eagles head to Pomona, N.Y. for the MAAC Championships. Niagara opens the double elimination tournament on Wednesday as they face No. 4 Quinnipiac at 3 PM. Niagara went 2-1 against the Bobcats this season.
