Niagara Closes Out Year At MAAC Championships

Pomona, N.Y.—The Niagara baseball team saw their season come to an end on the first day of the MAAC Championship as they fell to No. 4 Quinnipiac and No. 3 Canisius.
Game One Recap (L, 13-2)
  • Niagara scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. Nick Groves drew his 55th walk of the season to open the game. Kelly Corl then reached on an error and Groves moved to third on the play. Cole O'Connor then grounded into a double play but Groves scored on the play to make it 1-0.
  • Quinnipiac responded in the bottom of the second inning as they hit a pair of homers to take a 3-1 lead.
  • After setting down the Purple Eagles in the bottom of the second, the Bobcats scored once in the second to make it 4-1.
  • After a scoreless inning in the third, Quinnipiac scored five runs on three this to make it 9-1.
  • In the top of the sixth, O'Connor opened the inning with a single. Vincent Mauro then doubled down the left field line on the first of the at bat to put runners on second and third. Max Giordano then ripped a fly ball to left field for the sacrifice fly to bring home the second Niagara run of the game.
  • Quinnipiac scored four times in the bottom of the seventh and held Niagara scoreless in the top of seventh as the game ended due to the run rule.
Game Two Recap (L,6-2)
  • The Griffs struck first in the bottom of the first inning as they scored on a double play with the bases loaded.
  • Niagara answered in the top of the second inning. Giordano opened the inning with a single to left field. Matt Ward then doubled to right center but Giordano was thrown out at the plate attempting to scored, Ward moved up third on the play. After an out, Josh Marchese hit a ground-rule double to right field that brought Ward home to tie the game.
  • In the bottom of the third Canisius scored a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead.
  • The Griffs added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as they scored on a safety squeeze play.
  • Vincent Mauro opened the top of the sixth inning with a walk. With a runner on first and one out, Ward drove a double to left center that brought Mauro home to cut it to a 4-2 lead.
  • Canisius opened the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer to build a three-run lead. They added their six run in the bottom of the eighth.
Niagara Notes
  • In the first game, Groves earned his 56th walk of the season which tied the MAAC single season for walks. Groves broke the record in the top of the fifth inning the second game of the day against Canisius.
  • The Purple Eagles finish the season with a 24-22-1 record. Niagara finishes .500 for the first time since the 2006 season. It is third time since 2000 that Niagara has finished over .500.
  • Zach Cameron, Giordano, and Groves all broke records for the Purple Eagles this season. Cameron set the career record for saves with 15. Groves broke both the Niagara and MAAC single season record for walks with 57 in his freshmen season. Giordano closes his career as a Purple Eagle with one of the best seasons in Niagara history. He set a program record with 16 homers. His 27 career home runs ranks him second in program history.
Four Purple Eagles earned All-MAAC honors, the most since 2017 season.
