Purple Eagles Fall To Gaels In Game Two

New Rochelle, N.Y.—The Niagara baseball team played the second game of a weekend series against the Iona Gaels on Saturday. Niagara took an early lead but fell 10-6 to the Gaels.
Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles opened the scoring in the second inning. Vincent Mauro opened the inning with a single to the shortstop. One pitch after the single, Max Giordano hit his 15th homer of the season to give Niagara a 2-0 lead. After an out, Matt Ward and Josh Marchese notched back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. On the first pitch he saw Brady Desjardins doubled to left field to drive in Ward from third. Nick Groves then was hit a pitch to load the bases. Kelly Corl was at the plate and grounded into a fielder's choice to drive in the fourth Niagara run.
  • Iona got on the board in the bottom of the second after a double, a flyout, and a groundout.
  • With one out in the top of the third, Cole O'Connor doubled to right center. After an out, Marchese doubled to left center to drive in O'Connor from second to extend the Niagara lead to 5-1.
  • The Gaels once again answered in the bottom of the third as they drove in a pair of runs on a triple.
  • After holding the Purple Eagles scoreless in the fourth, Iona took a 6-5 lead with four hits.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Iona used three more hits to drive in two runs and extended their lead to 8-5.
  • Iona added a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to make it a 10-5 game heading to the ninth inning.
  • Cole Tucker doubled to start the ninth and Nate Milk pinch ran for Tucker. Mauro then singled to right field and Milk moved to third base. O'Connor singled the first pitch he saw up the middle to drive in Milk with the sixth Niagara run. Despite having runners on first and second, the Purple Eagles couldn't mount a comeback.
Niagara Notes
  • Niagara notched 14 hits in the game with six Purple Eagles having two hits. Mauro, Giordano, O'Connor, Ward, Marchese, and Desjardins each had two hits. Corl and Tucker each had a hit.
  • The Niagara pitching staff issued just two walks in the game.
  • Giordano is now second in the MAAC in hitting as he has a .390 batting average. He is third in the MAAC with 15 homers and is just five homers shy of tying the Niagara career home run record.
  • Niagara sits in fifth place in the MAAC and trail Quinnipiac by 1.5 games. They are a .5 game ahead of Manhattan and hold the tiebreaker over the Jaspers.
