Purple Eagles Drop Series Finale To Iona

New Rochelle, N.Y.—The Niagara baseball team closed out its road MAAC series on Sunday as they fell 8-4 against Iona on Sunday.
Game Recap
  • In the top of the fourth inning the Purple Eagles opened the scoring. Cole Tucker was hit a by a pitch to open the inning and Vincent Mauro drew a walk. Mauro came around to score with one out inning as he came across on an error to make it 1-0.
  • Iona responded in the bottom of the fourth inning as they scored three times to make it 3-1.
  • The Gaels built on their lead in the sixth inning as they hit a grand slam to make it a 7-1 game.
  • Iona extended the lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning as they pushed in a run on a double play.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, Cole O'Connor was hit by a pitch with one out. Matt Ward then singled to put runners on first and second with one out. After an out, Brady Desjardins singled home O'Connor to make it an 8-2 game.
  • After keeping the Gaels off the board in the eighth inning, the Purple Eagles looked to mount a comeback. Kelly Corl opened the ninth with a single which was followed by a double to left center by Cole Tucker. Mauro and Wyatt Palmer had back-to-back RBI groundouts but Niagara could not complete the comeback.
Niagara Notes
  • Ryan Minckler started on the mound and went 3.1 innings while striking out six batters.
  • Preston Prince struckout two batters in the seventh inning.
  • Brady Kobitowich pitched a scoreless eighth inning as he struckout one batter.
  • Niagara notched 10 hits in the game, Nick Groves led the way as he had three hits. It is the third time this season he had three hits in a game.
  • Corl and Ward each had two hits while Tucker, Josh Marchese, and Desjardins each had one hit.
  • The Purple Eagles sit in fifth place in the MAAC as they have a 11-10 MAAC record and hold the tie breaker with Manhattan who also has a 11-10 record. Mount St. Mary's sits in seventh with a 10-11 MAAC record.
