Purple Eagles Walkoff Against Bobcats

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara baseball team earned its second MAAC series win on Saturday as they won in the bottom of the ninth 4-3 over the Bobcats.

  • Niagara starter Marcus Cashman started his outing by getting out of a one out jam that had Bobcat runners on second and third. He got a popout and a groundout to end the inning unscathed.
  • In the bottom of the second inning, Max Giordano started the inning by reaching on an error. After a pair of outs including a fielder's choice that allowed Kelly Corl to reach. On a 1-1 pitch Gavin Schrader and Corl executed the perfect hit and run as Schrader singled to the left side that was vacated by the shortstop covering second. With runners on the corners Brady Desjardins singled to right field for the first Purple Eagle run of the game.
  • The Bobcats tied the game at one in the top of the third inning.
  • Neither team scored again until the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs in the inning Giordano singled and swiped second to get into scoring position with two outs. On a 2-2 pitch Josh Marchese picked up where he left off on Friday as he doubled down the right field line. He drove in his 11th run of the season.
  • Quinnipiac tied the game in the eighth following a one out triple and a groundout.
  • The Purple Eagles took the lead back in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cole Tucker drew a lead off walk and Nate Milk pinch ran for the Purple Eagles. Milk then swiped second and moved up to third on a wild pitch. With Marchese at the plate Milk scored on a wild pitch to give the Purple Eagles the lead.
  • In the bottom of the ninth the Bobcats extended the game as they scored on a single with the bases loaded. With the bases still loaded the Purple Eagles induced a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.
  • Cole O'Connor opened the bottom of the ninth with a single. Desjardins then drew a six pitch walk to put runners on first and second. As the lineup turned over, Nick Groves dropped down a SAC bunt to move the runners up 90 feet. With Matt Ward at the plate the Bobcats intentionally walked the catcher to load the bases. After strikeout Vincent Mauro came to the plate with two outs and the bases load. Mauro droved a 0-1 pitch to right center that was dropped by the Bobcat right fielder to give the Purple Eagles the walkoff win.
Niagara Notes
  • Cashman went five innings while allowing just one run and two hits. He struckout a season high eight while producing five groundouts.
  • Zach Cameron went four innings out of the bullpen while picking up his first win of the season. He struckout two while allowing two runs on four hits.
  • Giordano, Marchese, and Desjardins all had two hits while Marchese had two doubles.
  • The Niagara base runners swiped three bags with Groves, Milk, Giordano each swiping one.
  • With the win, Niagara won its second MAAC series of the season. It is the first time since the 2018 season in which Niagara has won two of its first three MAAC series' in the current three game series format.
  • Giordano is currently leading the MAAC in hitting at .396. He is third in the MAAC in homers with nine and third in RBI with 31.
  • Cashman's ERA moves to 3.27 which is third in the MAAC. Batters are hitting just .193 against the righty which is the best in the MAAC. He had 36 strikeouts on the season, that ranks seventh in the MAAC.
