Niagara Downs Manhattan In Convincing Fashion

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara baseball team opened the weekend in dominate fashion as they took down the Manhattan Jaspers 16-1 in the first game of a three game set with Manhattan.
Game Recap
  • The Jaspers stuck first in the top of the first inning as they manufactured a run on an error and a double steal but that would be all the offense they would generate.
  • In the bottom half of the opening frame, Matt Ward drew a one out walk. Cole Tucker stepped to the plate and blasted his first homer of the season to left field to give Niagara the 2-1 lead. On the very next pitch, Vincent Mauro went back to back with Tucker for his fifth homer of the season. After an out, Kelly Corl started the two out rally with a single to the third basemen. The Purple Eagles kept using the long ball in the opening inning and Gavin Schrader hit his third homer of the season to make it a 5-1 Purple Eagle lead after one inning.
  • After both teams went scoreless in the second inning, Niagara got back on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Tucker opened the inning and got on base as he was hit by a pitch. After a flyout, Max Giordano reached on an error to put runners on first and second. Corl ripped a single to left field to load the bases. After a strikeout, Jake Hutchins was hit by a pitch to drive in Tucker from third to make it a 6-1 Niagara lead. Brady Desjardins followed it up with a walk to push across the seventh Purple Eagle run.
  • The two teams played a scoreless fourth and fifth innings. Manhattan moved a runner to third base in the top of the sixth, but with two outs in the frame, Desjardins made a sliding play to his right and fired a missile to first base to get the runner and keep the Jaspers off the board.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Nick Groves drew a one out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Ward then drove in Groves from second with a single to make it a 8-1 Niagara lead.
  • Desjardins opened the bottom of the eighth with a double, Groves then reached on an error to put runners on the corners. After Groves swiped second and a strikeout. Tucker drove in both Purple Eagles and extended the lead nine as Niagara led 10-1. After a pitching change and a Mauro single, Giordano drove in Tucker to make it 11-1. Corl then doubled home a pair to make it 13-1. Cole O'Connor then pinch hit and singled home Corl to make it 14-1. After another pitching change, Nate Milk grabbed a bat and joined in on the run as he roped a first pitch fastball to the gap to drive in O'Connor. Desjardins big game continued as he doubled home Milk for the 16th Purple Eagle run.
