Purple Eagles Fall In Weekend Opener to EMU

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara baseball team opened a non-conference series with the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Friday. In the first game of the three-game set the Eagles downed the Purple Eagles 9-4.
Game Recap
  • Eastern Michigan struck first in the contest as they used two homers in the top of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead.
  • Max Giordano opened the bottom of the fourth inning with a single to left field which was followed by a Cole O'Connor single up the middle. After a Matt Ward sacrifice bunt, Josh Marchese launched a 0-1 pitch over the wall for a three run homer. After four innings, Niagara trailed 4-3.
  • The Eagles responded in the top of the fifth as they scored a pair of runs to take a 6-3 lead.
  • Niagara chipped away in the bottom of the sixth. Marchese opened the inning by pulling a 1-1 pitch through the right side. Gavin Schrader then reached on a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Nick Groves followed up the bunt with a sacrifice bunt of his own to move the runners up 90 feet. Two pitches later, Kelly Corl drove one to deep right field that allowed Marchese to score on the sacrifice fly and make it a two run game.
  • In the seventh inning, Eastern Michigan used small ball to scored three runs as they scored on sacrifice fly, a double steal, and a squeeze play.
  • Niagara could not answer in the late stages of the game and fell 9-4.
Niagara Notes
  • Nick Veselinovic started on the mound and went three innings while allowing four runs, he fanned two.
  • Cal Theal turned in an inning and a third and allowed just one hit and notched three groundouts.
  • Liam Reynolds pitched a near perfect eighth inning as he allowed a bloop hit while striking out one.
  • Preston Prince pitched the ninth and did not allow a hit while also striking out one batter.
  • Four Purple Eagles had multi hit games as Vincent Mauro, Giordano, Marchese, and Schrader all had two hits.
  • As a team Niagara drew seven walks with O'Connor leading the way with two.
  • Marchese's homer was his fifth of the season, it is the second multi-RBI game of the season as he now has 15 this season.
