Purple Eagles Drop Weekend Finale To Stags

Fairfield, CT—The Niagara baseball team fell to Fairfield in the final game of a three game weekend series with the Stags. The Purple Eagles fell to Fairfield 9-1 on Sunday.
Game Recap
  • After the Purple Eagles were kept off the board in the top half of the first Fairfield plated four runs in the bottom half to take a 4-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the second, Fairfield added two more runs on a homer. They extended the lead to 9-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Niagara scored its lone run in the sixth inning. Gavin Schrader opened the inning with a single. Brady Desjardins moved Schrader to second on groundout. On the first pitch he saw, Nick Groves dropped down a bunt that he legged out, the throw got away from the first basemen and Schrader scored on the play.
  • Zach Cameron came out of the bullpen in the fifth inning and went three scoreless innings. He allowed just one base runner on a hit by a pitch. He struckout three in the outing and got five ground outs.
  • Zac Laird pitched a scoreless eighth inning as he allowed a walk and a hit but struckout one.
Niagara Notes
  • Max Giordano led the led the team with a pair of hits and a walk. Groves, Kelly Corl, Schrader, and Nate Milk each had a hit.
  • Giordano leads the team in batting average at .382 while also having 12 homers and 40 RBI.
  • Laird's ERA is 3.29 which is the lowest on the team.
  • Fairfield had just five strikeouts in the game, which is the second least amount of strikeouts Niagara has had in a game this season.
  • Cameron and Marcus Cashman are tied for the team lead with 44 strikeouts this season.
  • Heading in to Niagara's MAAC bye week, the Purple Eagles are 8-7 in conference play.
