Strong Pitching Not Enough As Purple Eagles Fall

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara baseball team fell in a 3-2 game on Saturday to the Manhattan Jaspers.
Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. After a groundout, Max Giordano singled for the team's first base runner of the game. Giordano then swiped second to get into scoring position. After a strikeout, Gavin Schrader reached on an error that moved Giordano to third. With Jake Hutchins at the plate, the Manhattan pitcher threw a wild pitch that got away from the catcher to allow Giordano to hustle home for the game's first run.
  • In the top of the third inning the Jaspers took the lead on a two run home run.
  • The Purple Eagles responded in the bottom of the third inning as Nick Groves earned a one out walk.  Kelly Corl then followed the walk up with a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Following his four RBI day on Friday, Cole Tucker stepped in. He roped a single to center field and Groves was waved home for the second Purple Eagle run.
  • Both teams went down scoreless in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth inning, Manhattan hit a solo home run to take the 3-2 lead. Following the homer, Manhattan singled with one out. Steven Hospital came out of the bullpen and induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
  • The Purple Eagles best chance to tie the game came in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Ward opened the inning with a walk. After a pair of groundouts, Ward was on third with two outs in the inning. Brady Desjardins then drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Niagara could not convert to tie the game.
  • Zach Cameron entered the game in the top of the eighth with runners on first and second and no outs. Cameron got a trio of flyouts to keep it a 3-2 game.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Vincent Mauro hit a two out double but could not be driven in.
  • Still trying by one, Ward laced a single back up the middle in the bottom of the ninth to start the inning. Despite the leadoff single, the Purple Eagles could not tie the game in the ninth.
Niagara Notes
  • Ryan Minckler started on the mound for the Purple Eagles and allowed three runs on five hits while fanning five in 4.1 innings of work.
  • Hospital went 2.2 innings and allowed two hits while striking out four. He induced four groundouts.
  • Cameron went two clean innings while striking out one and notch four flyouts.
  • Outside of the Manhattan home runs, the Purple Eagles allowed just one runner to third base in the game.
  • The Purple Eagles turned two double plays in the game, it ties a season high for the Purple Eagles.
  • Niagara's pitching staff notched eight strikeouts in the game. They have had five or more strikeouts in all but four games this season.
  • The Purple Eagles did not commit an error in the game, it is the ninth time this season the Purple Eagles have been perfect in the field.
