Cameron Breaks Save Record In Series Win Over Manhattan

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara baseball team earned a series win over Manhattan on Sunday as they beat Jaspers 9-8 at Bobo Field.
Game Recap
  • The Jaspers struck first in the top half of the first as they used a walk and a double to push a run across.
  • After giving up a run in the top of the first, the Purple Eagles responded in the bottom half of the inning. Nick Groves opened the inning by notching a single on the first pitch he saw. On the next pitch he swiped second for his first stolen base of the game. After a flyout, Groves swiped third for his 14th stolen base of the season. After Cole Tucker was hit by a pitch, Vincent Mauro singled home Groves to tie the game. Mauro advanced to second on the throw as the throw was late to third as Tucker slid in save. Just two pitches later Max Giordano cleared the bases with a single and gave the Purple Eagles the 3-1 lead. Giordano came around to score on a Gavin Schrader single with two outs in the first.
  • Neither team scored again until the fifth inning. With the bases loaded Manhattan tried scoring two runs on a single to center but the second runner was thrown out at the plate by Groves who fired a missile from center field.
  • The Purple Eagles responded in the bottom of the fifth. Kelly Corl opened the inning with a double to right field, he then moved up to third on a flyout by Tucker. Mauro then drove in the fifth Purple Eagle run as he singled up the middle. Just two pitches later, Giordano hit his 10th homer of the season to increase the Niagara lead to 7-2.
  • In the top of the sixth the Jaspers scored twice to cut the Niagara lead to 7-4.
  • Manhattan made it a two run game in the top of the eighth as they scoring after a pair of hits.
  • The Purple Eagles responded in the bottom of the eighth added some insurance. With two outs Brady Desjardins drew a walk which was followed by a Groves single. One pitch after the Groves single, Corl roped a double to right field and drove in both runners to make it a 9-5 game.
  • The Jaspers attempted a comeback in the top of the ninth as they scored three runs to make it 9-8. Zach Cameron ended the game with strikeout to end the comeback.
Niagara Notes
  • Cameron pitched four innings out of the bullpen and struck out eight batters, the eight K's is a new career high. His previous career high was set in his freshman season when he struckout seven against NC Central. He picked up his sixth save of the season and his 12th of the his career. It set a new program record for Niagara. The record stood since 2014 and was held by Geoff Soja. Cameron is four saves away from tying the single season record for saves.
  • Groves drew a walk to open the bottom of the second inning. With the walk Groves tied the single season record for walks at 38, he is now tied with Greg Cullen for the most walks in a season. The freshman also stole four bases in the game, he has 16 stolen bases this season.
  • Niagara notched 10 hits, it is the 17th time this season that Niagara has tallied 10 or more hits. Groves led the way as he had three hits. Corl, Mauro, and Giordano each had two hits.
  • Five Purple Eagles drove in runs on Sunday. Giordano had four RBI, this is the 10th game this season that he had multi RBI games. He has 36 RBIs this season he leads Niagara and is fifth in the MAAC.
  • Both Corl and Mauro drove in two runs while Schrader drove in one run.
  • Marcus Cashman started on the mound and went 3.1 innings while allowing just one run on four hits. He struckout four in the outing, this season opposing hitters are hitting just .203 against him which leads the MAAC.
  • Zac Laird went 1.0 out of the pen and allowed one run while not allowing a hit.
  • Brady Kobitowixh picked up his team leading fifth win as he went 0.2 innings and did not allow a run on one hit.
  • The Niagara pitching staff stranded nine runners in the game.
  • Matt Ward threw out a runner attempting to steal for the fourth straight game. This season he has thrown out 11 runners.

  • The Purple Eagles play a midweek game against WNY foe St. Bonaventure on Tuesday in Olean. Niagara heads on the road next weekend to play Fairfield.
