Purple Eagles Drop Weekend Opener To Rider

Lawrenceville, N.J.—The Niagara baseball team fell in the opening game of its weekend series against Rider by a score of 5-1.
Game Recap
  • Nick Groves was hit by a pitch to open the game and then swiped second. The Purple Eagle leadoff hitter made his way to third base but could not score the first run of the game.
  • In the bottom of the first inning with one out, freshman Gavin Schrader made a diving catch to take away a hit from the Broncs.
  • Neither team recorded a hit until the third inning when Rider had a one out single. Ryan Minckler got two straight outs to end the inning.
  • Groves notched the first Purple Eagle hit to open the fourth inning, but could not come around to open the scoring.
  • In the top of the sixth inning Kelly Corl led off the inning with a bunt single, he then advanced to second after a failed pickoff attempt. After a pair of strikeouts, Matt Ward singled to center field to drive in Corl from second base.
  • Rider responded in the bottom of the sixth inning as they scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, the Purple Eagles had a pair of runners on but could not push across a run.
  • The Broncs opened the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer to make it 5-1.
Niagara Notes
  • Minckler went 5+ innings in his sixth start of the season, he allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three.
  • Nick Veselinovic went 1.2 innings out of the pen and allowed a run while striking out two.
  • Liam Reynolds closed out the eighth inning and did not allow a hit.
  • Groves, Ward, Max Giordano, and Corl recorded hits.
  • Groves has a five game hitting streak, he has reached base safely in 12 straight games. He has drawn at least one walk in eight of the last nine games.
  • Giordano has hits in seven of the last nine games, during that stretch he has 16 hits. He is hitting .387 this season, he is fourth in the MAAC in hitting.
  • Corl has a six game hitting streak, he has 14 hits in those six games.
  • Niagara moves to 3-1 in MAAC play and 11-8 overall.
