Purple Eagles Fall In Twin Bill At Rider

Lawrenceville, N.J.—The Niagara baseball team fell in a doubleheader on Sunday, in game one they fell 13-6 and in game two they lost 13-3 to the Rider Broncs.
Game One (L, 13-6)
  • Despite the 10:30 am start the Purple Eagles woke up early in the game. With two outs in the first inning, Cole Tucker singled to right field. On the very next pitch, Vincent Mauro singled to center to put runners on first and second. Max Giordano stepped in and on a 2-1 pitch he singled through the left side that brought Tucker home for the first run of the game. Kelly Corl drew a six pitch walk, on ball four the ball got passed the catcher which allowed Mauro to come home on the passed ball.
  • The Purple Eagles got back in the runs column in the fourth inning. Giordano opened the inning with a triple to right field. Corl drove in Giordano four pitches later with a SAC fly to right field. With two outs in the inning Jake Hutchins drew a four pitch walk which was followed by a Brady Dejardins double. Hutchins scored on the play to make it 4-0. One pitch later, Nick Groves swapped spots with Desjardins as he drove in the fifth Purple Eagle run.
  • In the sixth inning, the bases were loaded via a Hutchins walk, Groves being hit by a pitch, and a Matt Ward walk. With the count full at 3-2, Mauro drew a walk to make it a six run lead for the Purple Eagles.
  • Rider took the lead following a seven-run bottom of the sixth. They extended their lead in the seventh inning as they scored five runs. They added their final run in the eighth inning.
  • Niagara could not stage a comeback in the late innings.
  • Marcus Cashman started on the mound and went 5+ innings while allowing just three hits. He was charged with a pair of earned runs after he was taken out of the game in the sixth inning. He had four strikeouts in his sixth outing of the season.
Game Two (L, 13-3)
  • The Purple Eagles came out in the first inning and took a 2-0 lead. Groves opened the game with walk which was followed by a Matt Ward double to put runners on second and third. After a flyout, Mauro pulled a double down the left field line to drive both runners in.
  • Rider scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-2 lead.
  • In the bottom of the second, the Broncs scored five runs to jump out to a 9-2 lead. They added three more runs to make it a 12-2 game.
  • In the top of the sixth, Mauro singled to left field with one out. Mauro advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs in the inning, Josh Marchese singled and drove in Mauro for the third Purple Eagle run.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, the Broncs drove in their 13th run and made it 13-3 which ended the game due to the 10-run rule.
  • Brady Kobitowich, Cal Theal, and Preston Prince combined for 3.1 innings out of the bullpen and did not allow a run.
  • Of the 13 Rider runs, just four were earned runs.
Niagara Notes
  • Giordano had three hits in game one while driving in one run and drawing a walk.
  • Both Groves and Desjardins had two hits while driving in one run each in the first game of the day.
  • Mauro was the lone Purple Eagle with multiple hits in game two. He also added two RBI in the second game.
  • Ward, Marchese, and Corl had hits in game two.
  • Groves has 31 walks this season, he had drawn a walk in six straight games. He leads the MAAC in on base percentage (.546) and walks.
Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles play one more road game before their home opener on Thursday. Niagara travels south to Canisius for a non-conference game on Tuesday before hosting Quinnipiac at Bobo Field on Thursday at 3 PM.
