Purple Eagles Bested By Griffs

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The Canisius College Golden Griffins picked up a 12-11 win over Niagara Wednesday night in MAAC women's lacrosse action from a frigid Niagara Field.
 
The Purple Eagles fall to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in MAAC play.
 
Game Recap
First Quarter
• Niagara opened the scoring less than two minutes into the opening period with a goals from Lexi Braniecki, her first of the game.
• Canisius would take a 3-1 lead following three-straight tallies.
• In just over one minute of play, Niagara's Jaclyn Crane, Jenna Brill and Andra Savage each scored to help Niagara answer back and take a 4-3 lead.
• With 7:14 on the clock, Canisius' Paige Stachura would tie the game at 4-4.
• The ninth goal of the frame was scored by Braniecki on a free-position attempt, giving NU a 5-4 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
Second Quarter
• Niagara would take a 6-4 lead with a goal at the 5:58 mark of the second, a free-position from Rachel Crane, her first goal of the contest.
• Canisius would draw within one, 6-5, at the 2:52 mark of the second, but R. Crane would once again find the back of the net less than a minute later to put the Purple and White back on top by two, 7-5.
 
Third Quarter
• The Golden Griffins would score three-straight goals to start the second half, giving Canisius a 8-7 lead over Niagara.
• With 1:40 remaining in the third, R. Crane would even the score at eight with her third of the contest, before giving NU a 9-8 advantage with 12-seconds remaining in the third with her fourth tally.  
 
Fourth Quarter
• Canisius would strike for two goals to start the fourth and final stanza, taking a 10-9 lead.
Lois Garlow would get career goal number 98 with her first tally of the contest, tying the game at 10-10.
• The Griffs would go up by tow, 12-10, with 1:39 remaining in the contest.
• With 1:16 to go, R. Crane would notch her fifth of the game, to put Niagara down by one.
• The Purple Eagles would win the ensuing draw but ome up empty in their final possession, falling to Canisius by one goal.
 
Niagara Notes
• Niagara saw its four-game win streak over Canisius come to an end. The Griffs now lead the all-time series, 18-14.
• R. Crane led Niagara with five goals and five points. The senior is now five tallies away from 100 career goals.
• Braniecki added two goals and two assists, her seventh multi-point game of the season.
• Niagara won 14 draw controls, with three apiece from R. Crane, Riley Latray, and Sydney Huhtala.
• Huhtala lead Niagara with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Jordan Roy picked up six saves in the loss, moving to 2-2 in goal this season.
• NU finished the game 17-for-19 on clears.
