Offense Leads The Way As Niagara Completes MAAC Sweep

Jersey, City, NJ—The Niagara baseball team completed the weekend sweep of Saint Peter's with a pair of wins on Sunday over the Peacocks.
Game One (W, 17-5)
  • The Purple Eagle bats came alive early in the day as Cole Tucker doubled to right center to drive in Matt Ward in the first inning to give Niagara a 1-0 lead.
  • After the Peacocks were shutdown in the first inning, the Purple Eagles went back to work at the plate in the second inning. Vincent Mauro opened the frame with a double down the left field line. After a popout, Kelly Corl laid down a bunt and beat the throw to put runners on the corners. Wyatt Palmer then grounded into a fielder's choice that drove in the run.
  • Saint Peter's got on the board in the bottom of the second to make it 2-1 Niagara.
  • Neither team scored again until the fifth inning. Nick Groves opened the inning with a walk and then swiped second. Ward then singled up the middle to drive Groves in to make it 3-1. Three batters later with runners on first and third, Mauro tripled to right center to drive in two more Niagara runs. Niagara led 5-1 after five full innings.
  • The Peacocks opened the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo homer to make it 6-2, they pushed another run across later in the inning to make it 6-3.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Purple Eagles scored nine runs. Max Giordano opened the inning with a walk which was followed by singles from Mauro and Jake Hutchins. With the bases loaded, Corl singled through the left side and drove in Mauro and Giordano to make it 8-3. Three batters later with the bases loaded again, Gavin Schrader drove in two runs on a single to increase the lead to 10-3. Tucker was the next batter and singled to left to drive in another Purple Eagle run. After a pitching change, Giordano reached on an error to load the bases. Mauro stepped to the plate and blasted his first career grand slam to give Niagara a 15-3 lead.
  • Saint Peter's scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 11 run game.
  • In the top of the eighth Corl hit a solo homer to lead of the inning to make it 16-4.
  • The Purple Eagles added one more run in the top of the ninth as Corl drove in Tucker with a SAC fly.
  • Marcus Cashman started on the mound and picked up his third win of the season. He went five innings while allowing three runs on four hits while striking out five.
  • Marty Cole came out of the pen and went one inning while allowing just one hit and striking out one.
  • Nick Veselinovic, Cal Theal, and Noah Richardson all went an inning while combining seven strikeouts. Both Theal and Richardson had three strikeouts.
Game Two (W, 15-7)
  • The Purple Eagles started the game flying as Tucker drove in Ward with one out in the first inning on a double to right center.
  • In the bottom of the second, Saint Peter's evened the game with a solo homer. Later in the inning they took a 2-1 lead.
  • Niagara responded in the top of the fourth inning. Giordano started the rally with a one out single which was followed by a walk from Gavin Schrader. With two outs in the inning, Corl blasted a homer to right field to Niagara in front with a 4-2 lead.
  • After three innings of no runs for either team, the Purple Eagles scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning. Nate Milk was hit by a pitch to open the inning, he then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Groves stepped in a singled to left which drove in Milk from second to make it 5-2. Ward then walked to put runners on first and second. Groves swiped third to put runners on the corners. Tucker drove a flyball to center field that brought Groves home on the SAC fly. Mauro drew a walk which forced a pitching change with runners on first and second. Giordano was the first batter the new pitcher faced and Giordano blasted his MAAC leading ninth home run of the season. Later in the inning with two outs, Corl drove in Schrader after he singled after the homer. Niagara led 10-2 after seven innings.
  • Saint Peter's attempted a comeback in the bottom of the eighth as they scored five runs to make it 10-7.
  • Niagara built the lead back to 12 in the top of the ninth as they scored five runs of their own. Hutchins legged out a one out infield single to which was followed up by a Corl single that moved Hutchins to third. Corl then swiped second and Milk walked to load the bases for the top of the order. Groves and Ward drew back to-back walks to drive in two runs. With bases still loaded, Tucker singled and drove in two runs to make it 14-7 Niagara. After a fielder's choice, Giordano came to the plate with runners on first and third. Giordano doubled to drive in one run and to increase the lead to eight.
  • Brady Kobitowich came out of the bullpen in the second inning and went four innings while allowing no runs on four hits. He struckout four as he picked up the win.
  • Steven Hospital needed just nine pitches to get through his inning of work as he struckout one.
  • Laird closed out the game in the ninth inning as he struckout two.
Niagara Notes
Game One
  • In the first game of the day, Mauro went 4-6 with six RBI. He also hit for the first cycle, it is the first time since the 2012 season that a Niagara has hit for the cycle. It is just the third time since the turn of the century that Niagara had a player hit for the cycle.
  • Three players had three or more hits while all but one starter had a hit. Six players had RBIs with five of the six having more than one RBI.
  • All nine starters reached base in game as the team drew seven walks. Groves had three walks in the game.
  • The 17 runs scored in the most runs Niagara has scored in a game this season. They also had 16 hits which is a new season high.
  • The pitching staff struckout 11 in the game, it was the seventh game this season in which Niagara has struckout 10 or more batters.
Game Two
  • Six Purple Eagles had a hit in the game while Tucker was 4-5, Corl was 4-5 and Giordano was 3-6.
  • Tucker, Giordano, and Corl all had three four RBIs in the game.
  • The Purple Eagles drew 11 walks with Groves, Ward, Mauro, Schrader, and Milk all drawing two walks. The 11 walks is a new season high.
Weekend Notes
  • The Purple Eagles outscored Saint Peter's 42-16 in the three games, the 42 runs in a three game stretch is most in any three games this season.
  • As a team the Purple Eagles hit .361 with five homers and 41 RBIs. Niagara also drew 26 walks on the weekend and had a on base percentage of .481.
  • Niagara has won nine straight games against Saint Peter's and 19 of the last two matchups. Niagara is 43-11 against the Peacocks since 2003.
  • Corl hit a team high .769 on the weekend as he had 10 hits in 13 at bats, he had two homers and eight RBI.
  • Tucker hit .615 with three walks and six RBI.
  • In the three games, Niagara was 11-12 on stolen bases, Groves led the way as he went 5-5 in stolen base attempts.
  • Niagara had 14 extra base hits in the three games.

  • MAAC play continues for the Purple Eagles as they head on the road once again as they take on Rider in a three game series that starts on Friday.
