Hockey Falls To Holy Cross To Close Weekend

Worcester, MA—Niagara hockey closed out the weekend trip to Holy Cross, Niagara fell 3-0 to the Crusaders.
Game Recap
First Period
  • In the opening period neither team solved the others goalie as the period ended 0-0, the Purple Eagles outshot the Crusaders 10-4 in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Niagara won six faceoffs in the opening period with Ryan Cox having three wins, Glebs Prohorenkovs had two wins while Christian Gorscak winning one.
  • The Purple Eagles also blocked four shots in the opening period with Jonathan Ziskie, Lucas Bahn, Albin Nilsson and Prohorenkovs all blocking one.
Second Period
  • Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead just under three minutes into the second period.
  • Following the goal neither team generated much offense as there was just a combined 13 shots in the period. Niagara had five shots in the frame.
  • Niagara won 11 of 18 faceoffs in the second period and led 17-15 after two periods.
Third Period
  • The Crusaders milked the clock away in the third period and doubled their lead at the 13:51 mark.
  • Niagara tallied eight shots in the period and pulled Chad Veltri with over five minutes left in the period for the extra attacked. The Purple Eagles earned a later power play but Holy Cross iced the game with a empty net shorthanded goal.
  • The Purple Eagles went 16-8 in the faceoff circle in the third period.
Niagara Notes
  • Niagara senior forward Jason Pineo played in his 100th career game on Friday. He is the fifth Purple Eagle to play in over 100 college games.
  • The Purple Eagles won 33 of 56 draws while Prohorenkovs went 14-8 in the circle. Cox won 12 of 18 faceoffs in his team leading 145th career game.
  • Niagara gave Holy Cross just one power play and did not allow a shot from Holy Cross.
  • The Purple Eagles now sit in sixth place in the Atlantic Hockey standings with two games left in the regular season.
Up Next
  • The regular season concludes next weekend as the Purple Eagles play Mercyhurst in a home and home series on Friday and Saturday. Niagara heads to Erie on Friday before hosting the Lakers on Saturday. Both games are slated for 7 PM faceoffs.
