Purple Eagles Fall In Overtime At Mercyhurst

Erie, Pa.—The Niagara hockey team made the trip to Mercyhurst for its final road game of the regular season. The Purple Eagles earned a point as they fell in overtime to the Lakers.
Game Recap
First Period
  • Neither team scored in the opening period and Mercyhurst edged out Niagara 16-14 in shots. Albin Nilsson led the way in the shot column as he had four in the opening period.
  • Niagara had the edge in the faceoff circle as they won 14 faceoffs. Ryan Cox won a game high five draws while Ryan Naumovski and Jason Pineo both won three.
  • The Purple Eagles blocked four shots in the first period as Casey Carreau blocked two and Noah Carlin and Albin Nilsson each blocked one.
Second Period
  • Niagara took the 1-0 lead early in the second period as they scored just 2:04 into the period. Jay Ahearn forced a turnover deep inside the Laker zone and the puck found the stick of Cox. Cox passed the puck across the ice to Shane Ott who one timed it into the net. It was his sixth goal of the season.
  • The Lakers scored at the 16:18 mark of the second period to tie the game ahead of the intermission.
  • The Purple Eagles outshot Mercyhurst in second period 10-9 as the shots sat 25-24 Mercyhurst after 40 minutes.
Third Period
  • Mercyhurst grabbed the 2-1 lead just 5:43 into the third period.
  • At the 8:44 mark of the third period, the trio of Nilsson, Carreau and Prohorenkovs held the puck in the Mercyhurst zone for an extended period of time. The Prohoroenkovs finished the shift by scoring his 11th goal of the season while Nilsson picked up his 12 assist of the season.
  • In the third period, Niagara generated 11 shots in the third period but could not sneak another past Mercyhurst.
  • The teams were tied at two at the end of regulation and the game went to overtime.
Overtime
  • Just 43 seconds into the overtime period, the Lakers scored to the take the win and the extra point.
Niagara Notes
  • Chad Veltri made 38 saves in his 91st career game.
  • Niagara had 11 blocked shots with Lucas Bahn, Prohorenkovs, Noah Carlin, and Carreau each having blocked two each.
  • Five different Purple Eagles finished with a point while 15 different players had shot on goal.
  • Niagara now sits in the final playoff position in Atlantic Hockey are guaranteed to play the first round on the road.
