Purple Eagles Complete Sweep Of No. 18 RIT

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara team closed out it's weekend series against No. 18 RIT at home on Saturday night. After winning game one on Thursday the Purple Eagles completed a sweep of the Tigers winning 4-1 on Saturday night.
Game Recap
First Period
  • The Purple Eagles once again came out flying against the Tigers. At the 5:19 mark of the first period, RIT took a tripping penalty to give Niagara it's first power play opportunity. Gelbs Prohorenkovs won the faceoff deep in the RIT zone, Max Ruoho fed the puck across the ice to Shane Ott who found Josef Mysak. Mysak fed it back to Ott in the top of the slot. Ott walked and took a wrister through a screen set by Albin Nilsson and Prohorenkovs. The puck found the back of the net for Ott's fifth goal of the season.
  • RIT tied the game at one at the 7:52 mark of the period as a puck deflected off a Niagara defensemen into the net.
  • The first period ended with RIT having eight shots on goal and Niagara seven.
  • The two teams were even in the faceoff dot as each team won nine draws. Both Jason Pineo and Prohorenkovs had three wins.
Second Period
  • Just 30 seconds into the second period, Olivier Gauthier took a stretch pass from Ruoho and one touched it to Casey Carreau. Carreau skated into the zone and found Pineo going to the net and fired it his way. Pineo jammed it into the net for his eighth goal of the season. The Purple Eagles led 2-1 just 30 seconds into the second period.
  • Neither team scored the rest of the period as RIT outshot the Purple Eagles 9-7 in the middle frame.
  • Both teams had a power play in the second period, RIT was limited to two shots and failed to convert.
  • The Purple Eagles controlled the faceoff circle in the frame as they won 11 of 16 faceoffs. After 40 minutes, Ryan Cox and Prohorenkovs each had seven wins.
Third Period
  • The third period started with the Purple Eagles on the power play for 17 seconds but the Purple Eagles count convert.
  • With the teams playing four on four with just over nine minutes remaining in the third period, the Purple Eagles made it a two goal game. Mysak started the rush from behind the next and played the Puck to Pineo who was rushing up the ice. He entered the zone and dropped the puck to Gauthier. Gauthier took a shot that was save, he quickly collected his rebound and picked a corner for his eighth goal of the season.
  • At the 11:44 mark of the frame the Purple Eagles had a four on three power play. Just as the teams went to four on four play the Purple Eagles extended it's lead to three. Ruoho was at the point and slid it to Mysak. Mysak faked a shot and fired a cross ice pass to Carreau. Carreau one touch passed it to Prohorenkovs who was wide open on the backdoor for his 10th goal of the season.
  • Niagara did not allow the Tigers to get back into the game as RIT was held off the score sheet in the final frame despite taking 13 shots compared to just 11 from Niagara.
Niagara Notes
  • Chad Veltri made 28 saves in his 14th win of the season. He now has 37 career wins which is tied for the most among active Atlantic Hockey goalies.
  • The Purple Eagles now have three players with 10 or more goals on the season along with four players over 20 points.
  • Niagara has now scored a power play goal in fourth straight games while they have scored 14 times on the man advantage this season.
  • In 16 games this season the Purple Eagles have led after 40 minutes. In those games, they are 13-1-2.
  • Niagara scored four goals in a game for the 12 games this season, they are 11-0-1 in those 12 games.
  • Eight players recorded points including four who had multiple points. Mysak had a career high three assists in the game. Gauthier had his second multiple point game as he had two points. Pineo had two points for his fourth multi point game of the season. Carreau had two points on two assists for his sixth multi point game of the season.
  • The Purple Eagle now have 33 points this season and are tied for fourth in the AHA standings.
  • With the sweep of No. 18 RIT, it is the first time the Purple Eagles have swept a nationally ranked team since the 2006-07 season when they swept No. 16 Quinnipiac at Dwyer Arena.

  • The Purple Eagles take their final weekend road trip of the regular season as they head east to Holy Cross. They played the Crusaders on Thursday and Friday at 7 PM.
