NU Falls To Canisius In Game One Of MAAC Championships

POMONA, N.Y. – The No. 6 Purple Eagles (19-31, 13-11 MAAC) fell to No. 3 Canisius (26-23, 15-9 MAAC), 11-0, in seven innings in the opening game of the MAAC Championships on Wednesday.

Game Recap
  • An RBI triple from the Griffs in the bottom of the first inning gave them an early 1-0 lead over NU.
  • Canisius added two runs in the fourth inning to take a three-run lead, 3-0.
  • In the top of the fifth, with two outs on the board, Benny Serrano singled through the right side, picking up Niagara's first hit of the game. Matt Ward was then walked to put a runner in scoring position, but the Purple Eagles went scoreless in the inning.
  • Dawson Bailey was hit by a pitch in the sixth to get on base. Cole O'Connor then singled to right field to advance Bailey with only one out on the board, but NU was not able to capitalize and remained behind the Griffs by just three runs, 3-0.
  • Canisius had a big sixth inning, scoring eight runs to take an 11-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Serrano had the final hit of the game for NU in the seventh inning as Niagara fell to Canisius, 11-0.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Serrano led the Purple Eagles with two hits, while O'Connor added one.
  • Marcus Cashman (2-5) took the loss on the mound. He struck out two and gave up three runs on five hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
  • Kyle Smyth fanned two in 1.0 inning of relief.

  • Niagara will face the loser of the No. 4 Monmouth versus No. 5 Rider game tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the first elimination game of the tournament.
