Purple Eagles Edge St. Bonaventure, 5-4

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (16-30) wrapped up non-conference play with a 5-4 victory over St. Bonaventure (5-36) on Tuesday.

Game Recap
  • Cole Tucker opened scoring, going yard in the bottom of the first inning to give the Purple Eagles a 1-0 lead over the Bonnies.
  • St. Bonaventure scored in the top of the second to tie the score, 1-1.
  • In the bottom of the second, a double from Brady Desjardins scored Vincent Mauro to put Niagara back in the lead, 2-1. Then, with runners on second and third, Dawson Bailey homered over the left field fence to give NU a 5-1 lead over St. Bonaventure.
  • A two-run homerun from the Bonnies in the top of the fifth cut the NU lead to two runs, 5-3.
  • St. Bonaventure added one more run in the sixth inning, but the Purple Eagles allowed only three Bonnies on base in the remaining three innings to come away with the 5-4 win to split the season's home-and-home series.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Desjardins led NU in hits with three, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
  • Mauro and Nick Castellana each added two hits.
  • Bailey recorded a team-high three RBIs.
  • Max Giordano made his first career start on the mound, fanning a career-high four batters. He allowed one run on three hits in a 2.2-inning no-decision.
  • Nick Veselinovic (1-1) earned the win. He struck out a career-high three and gave up two runs on three hits in 2.0 innings pitched.
  • Marty Cole earned his first career save. He tossed one scoreless, hitless inning to close out the game.
