NU Falls To Monmouth, 4-3

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Purple Eagles (2-23, 0-5 MAAC) fell to Monmouth (14-14, 5-0 MAAC) by one run, 4-3, on Saturday.

Game Recap
  • Josh Marchese had the first hit  of the gamefor the Purple Eagles, singling to right field with two outs on the board in the top of the second inning.
  • In the top of the third, with two outs on the board, Dawson Bailey doubled to right center. Max Giordano and Cole Tucker were then walked to load the bases for the Purple Eagles, but the Hawks got the final out of the inning to keep NU scoreless.
  • The Hawks got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead over NU after a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • With bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Spencer Marcus doubled to left field, driving in two runs to put Niagara in the lead, 2-1.
  • Monmouth, however, reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh, 3-2, after a two-run homerun.
  • In the top of the eighth, Giordano singled down the third base line to lead-off the inning, but NU remained scoreless.
  • Monmouth added one run in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a two-run lead, 4-2.
  • After a single up the middle from Matt Ward to lead off the ninth inning, Marchese and Marcus were walked to load the bases. With one out on the board, a sacrifice fly from Brady Desjardins scored Wyatt Palmer, who pinch ran for Ward, to leave NU trailing by only one run, 4-3. The next NU batter, however, grounded out and the Hawks came away with the one-run win, 4-3.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Marchese led NU with two hits.
  • Marcus batted in a team-high two runs.
  • Cole O'Connor had one stolen base for the Purple Eagles.
  • Marcus Cashman struck out two while allowing just one run on one hit and one walk in 5.0 innings pitched.
  • Chaz DeLuca (0-3) took the loss on the mound. He struck out one and gave up three runs on two hits in 2.0 innings pitched.
