SEATTLE, Wash. – The Seattle Mariners announced on Saturday that pitcher Matthew Brash will be part of the team's starting rotation. Brash will be on Seattle's Opening Day roster as its No. 5 starter and is slated to make his MLB debut against the Chicago White Sox on April 13.
Brash, who was called up by the Mariners in September, is the 18
th player in Niagara baseball history to make it to the Major Leagues and the first since Sal Maglie in the 1950's.
Brash (1-0) has been a standout for the Mariners during Spring Training, gaining attention with his lethal slider. He has made three appearances and two starts on the mound, picking up one win. He has fanned 12 in 9.1 innings pitched and has a 0.96 ERA.
Brash was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB Draft and was traded to the Mariners in 2020. Brash was called up to Triple-A Tacoma shortly before being called up to the Mariners during their series against the Oakland A's on Sept. 28. Brash, who was named the 2021 Jamie Moyer Minor League Pitcher of the Year, also played for the Double-A Arkansas Travelers and the High-A Everett AqauSox during the 2021 season.
Brash had a phenomenal three-year career (2017-19) with the Purple Eagles. He was the 2019 MAAC Pitcher of the Year, the first-ever from Niagara. That season, he set the NU and MAAC single-season strikeouts record with 121 and was 10th in the country in strikeouts. His 2.43 ERA was the second-best in Niagara history in a single season.
Following his freshman season (2017), Brash was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year and was named a 2017 Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. He was Niagara's first-ever All-American selection.
Brash has multiple entries in the Niagara baseball record book. He has the second-best career ERA (2.97), the fourth-best winning percentage (.631), the second-most strikeouts (215) and is tied for third in shutouts (two).
