Niagara Sweeps Doubleheader With Rider

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (5-25, 2-7 MAAC) swept a doubleheader with Rider (18-16, 6-3 MAAC), picking up their first conference wins of the season and first victories of the season at Bobo Field.

Game 1: Niagara 2, Rider 1
Game Recap
  • In the bottom of the second inning, Liam Ward doubled to center field, scoring Spencer Marcus to give NU a 1-0 lead over the Broncs.
  • The Niagara and Rider defenses battled it out, holding each other scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when the Broncs got one run across to tie the score, 1-1.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Eli Selby hit an infield single, sending Cole O'Connor home to earn NU the 2-1 walk-off win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Marcus led the Purple Eagles in hits with two. O'Connor, Selby, Liam Ward, Dawson Bailey and Nick Castellana each added one hit.
  • Selby and Liam Ward each earned one RBI.
  • Marcus Cashman fanned nine, just one short of his career-high, in 5.0 innings pitched in a no-decision start. Cashman allowed just two hits and walked three.
  • Ben Erwin (1-0) earned the win. He struck out one and allowed one hit in 1.0 inning pitched.

 
Game 2: Niagara 11, Rider 3
Game Recap
  • The Broncs took a 1-0 lead over NU in the top of the fifth after a solo homerun and added a second run in the sixth to take a 2-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, an RBI double from Max Giordano put NU on the board. Marcus then scored on a wild pitch to tie the score, 2-2. An RBI single from Matt Ward scored Giordano, putting the Purple Eagles on top, 3-2.
  • The Broncs tied the score, 3-3, in the top of the eighth.
  • Niagara, however, had a monster eighth inning. Brady Desjardins doubled down the right field line, scoring Matt Ward to put Niagara back in the lead, 4-3. With bases loaded, a three-RBI double from Cole Tucker extended the NU lead, 7-3. Tucker scored after a single from Josh Marchese. With two runners on base, Giordano crushed a homerun over the fence in center field, giving the Purple Eagles an 11-3 lead over Rider.
  • The Broncs were retired in order in the top of the ninth, cementing the 11-3 victory for Niagara.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Niagara's 11 runs and 16 hits are both season-highs. The team scored eight runs on eight hits in the eighth inning.
  • Giordano and Matt Ward led NU at the plate, both recording three hits. Tucker, Marchese, Spencer and Desjardins each had two hits.
  • Giordano had a team-high four RBIs and Tucker had three RBIs.
  • Blake MacMillan started on the mound, fanning six, one short of his career-high, in 5.0 innings pitched. He gave up two runs on seven hits.
  • Zach Cameron (1-0) got the win for the Purple Eagles. He struck out two in 2.0 shutout innings.
