Purple Eagles Defeat Youngstown State, 5-3

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Purple Eagles (3-24) defeated the Youngstown State Penguins (10-23), 5-3, in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.

Game Recap
  • The Penguins scored in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • In the top of the fourth inning, Eli Selby singled through the left side, scoring Cole O'Connor to tie the score, 1-1.
  • A solo homerun from Dawson Bailey in the top of the fifth gave NU its first lead of the game, 2-1.
  • Youngstown State reclaimed the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the fifth after a two-run homerun.
  • Niagara had a big sixth inning, with Josh Marchese tying the score, 3-3, after a solo homer to right field. With one runner on base, Vincent Mauro blasted his first career homerun to left field, putting the Purple Eagles back ahead, 5-3.
  • The Purple Eagles did not allow the Penguins to score in the remainder of the game and came away with the win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Bailey led the Purple Eagles in hits with two.
  • Mauro had a team-high two RBIs.
  • Bailey, Selby and Marchese each batted in one run.
  • Selby, Cole Tucker, Marchese, O'Connor, Mauro each had one hit.
  • Gavin Krawiec (1-0) earned the win and Zach Cameron earned his first save of the season.
