Purple Eagles Come Up Short Saturday Against RIT

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – A late surge by the Purple Eagles comes up short as RIT defeats Niagara, 3-2, Saturday night in Atlantic Hockey action from the Gene Polisseni Center.

Game Recap
First Period
• RIT opened the scoring Saturday night with a goal 4:46 into the first.
• During NU's first power play opportunity – Niagara nearly tied the game at one when the puck was bouncing in front of the RIT net, but the play was whistled dead as RIT was called for cross-checking.
• Moments later, Carter Randklev scored the power play goal for Niagara, as the sophomore tied the game at 1-1 13:19 into the opening period. Shane Ott and Chris Harpur were awarded the assists on the play.
• After getting outshot 13-2 through the first half of the period, Niagara finished the frame outshooting the Tigers, 5-2.
• Niagara also won 16 faceoffs during the first period of play.

Second Period
• The second started with 4-on-4 as NU and RIT were called for roughing following the first-period horn.
• During the 4-on-4, Niagara took three shots, compared to two for the Tigers.
• Niagara would get another power play chance 3:58 into the period. The Purple Eagles took a handful of shots trying to break the 1-1 tie during the man-up opportunity.
• RIT would make it a 2-1 game with a power play goal at the 11:41 mark.
• The Tigers would score on the power play for the second time in the period to make the score 3-1.
• After 40-minutes of action, Niagara had 14 shots on goal, and 25 faceoff wins.

Third Period
• Randklev nearly put NU down one with a breakaway goal, but the RIT goalie was able to get a piece of his shot to keep the Tigers on top, 3-1.
• Niagara would go on the power play for the third time Saturday after RIT was called for cross-checking.
• Ott would find the back of the net 33 seconds into the power play to put Niagara down one, 3-2. Zac Herrmann and Jason Pineo got the assists on the Purple Eagles' second goal of the night.
• Niagara would have a man-advantage for five of the last seven minutes of the third. However, the RIT penalty kill would hold off the Purple Eagles even after NU pulled Veltri with less than a minute left in the major.
• Niagara took six shots during the five-minute power play, with Randklev nearly scoring the game-tying goal with 2:06 remaining in regulation.
• The Purple Eagles would take three shots in the final minute, but credit to the RIT goalie as the Tigers held on for the 3-2 win.

Niagara Notes
• Four of Carter Randklev's eight career goals have come against RIT.
• Ott finished the night with two points with one goal and one assist. The freshman's goal was his third power play tally of the season.
• Veltri finished the game with 24 saves on 27 shots faced. The netminder has made 20 or more saves in 18 games this season.
• Niagara scored two power play goals – the fifth time this season, the Purple and White scored at least two goals with the man advantage.
• The Purple Eagles finished the contest with 27 shots on goal, led by Ryan Cox (5) and Randklev (4).
• Niagara won 34 of the game's 46 faceoffs, with Pineo winning a team-best 12.
Noah Carlin finished with two of the teams 10 blocks. Niagara has 20 games this season, recording 10 or more blocked shots.

• Niagara will close out the regular season with a pair of games in Springfield, Mass., against AHA-leading AIC. The Purple Eagles and Yellow Jackets will play at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25, and Saturday, Feb. 26.
