Purple Eagles Defeated By Fairfield

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Niagara men's basketball team (11-12, 6-8 MAAC) was defeated by Fairfield (11-13, 5-8 MAAC), 73-53, on Saturday afternoon, halting its win streak at three games.

Game Recap
First Half
  • The Stags went on a 10-3 run to open the half. A jump shot from Marcus Hammond cut the Fairfield lead to five points, 10-5, with a little over 14 minutes on the clock.
  • Fairfield got ahead, 20-9, but the Purple Eagles went on a 9-0 run, which included a 3-pointer from Rob Brown III and two points each from Hammond, Sam Iorio and Greg Kuakumensah, to come within two points of the lead, 20-18.
  • The Stags answered with a 12-0 run to extend their lead over Niagara to 14, 32-18, with less than a minute left in the half.
  • Hammond added another bucket to close out the half and the Purple Eagles trailed by 12, 32-20, going into halftime.
Second Half
  • Hammond opened scoring in the second half to bring Niagara within 10 points of the Stags, 32-22.
  • Jumpers from Noah Thomasson and Iorio left NU trailing by 11, 37-26, with 16:15 left on the clock.
  • The Stags went on a 15-0 run to get ahead of the Purple Eagles, 52-26, with a little under 12 minutes to go.
  • Thomasson and Iorio sank consecutive triples for Niagara and Julian Mackey made two foul shots, but Niagara trailed by 21, 55-34.
  • Another 3-pointer from Iorio put Niagara within 20 points, 57-37, with about nine minutes left to play.
  • Trailing 63-39, Mackey made a 3-point shot and a bucket from Kuakumensah less than one minute later put Niagara down by 22, 66-44.
  • Touba Traore, Kuakumensah, Mackey and Steven Levnaic all scored in the final five minutes of the half, but it was not enough to overcome the Stags as NU fell to Fairfield, 73-53.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Iorio led the Purple Eagles in scoring with 13 points. He also brought down four rebounds.
  • Kuakumensah added 11 points for NU. He shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
  • Thomasson and Jordan Cintron led the team in rebounding with six boards each.
  • Thomasson led NU in assists with three.
  • Hammond added eight points and Thomasson and Mackey each had seven.
