Niagara Hockey Wins First Round of the Battle of the Birds

Waltham, MA—The Niagara Purple Eagle Hockey team opened their weekend road trip against Bentley with a 6-0 win over the Falcons.
Game Recap
First Period
  • The game got off to an odd start as the Purple Eagles started the game on the power play. Bentley was given a bench minor in pregame after a procedure penalty.
  • After their first shot of the game was turned away, the Purple Eagles scored just 43 seconds into the game. After setting up the power play the Purple Eagles showed off their passing. Shane Ott played it low to Jason Pineo who fed it outside to Ryan Cox. Cox made no mistake and one timed it into the net to give Niagara the lead. It was the fastest goal into the game in the AHA this season.
  • Cox wasn't done in the opening period, at the 15:55 mark of the period the Purple Eagles doubled their lead. Cox drove to the net as a shot from David Posma was deflected by Carter Randklev, the puck fluttered to the net and went of Cox's foot into the net. With the goal Cox became the first Purple Eagle to hit double digits in points.
  • Niagara wasn't done in the opening period, on their second power play of the game, the Purple Eagle sustained pressure. After failed clear from Bentley, Josef Mysak fed a pass to Casey Carreau who ripped a one-timer into the net.
  • Despite leading in the first period, Niagara was outshot by Bentley 14-13 in the first period.
Second Period
  • In the second period the teams, played a back and forth game with limited chances.
  • Bentley had the best chance to get on the board late in the period on a mini-breakaway but Chad Veltri kept the Falcons off the board.
  • Niagara had the advantage in shots in the second frame as they tallied eight shots while Bentley had just five.
Third Period
  • Niagara got back in the goal column early in the third period as Ott threw the puck towards the net. The puck bounced off a Bentley defensemen and into the net for the fourth Niagara goal.
  • At the 11:49 mark of the third period, Niagara scored their fifth goal. After the Purple Eagles were given a penalty Bentley pulled their goal. In the neutral zone, Pineo forced a turnover and the puck found Noah Carlin's stick. Carlin netted his first career goal into the empty net.
  • Pineo wasn't done in the game. Jonathan Ziskie fed a breakout pass to Lars Rodne who got the puck up to Pineo. Pineo deked around one defensemen and sniped the goalie to give Niagara their sixth goal.
  • In the third Niagara was outshot 15-9 as Bentley tried to get on the board. Veltri stood tall and turned away all 15 shots.
Niagara Notes
  • Veltri notched his fifth career shutout which is now the most among active Atlantic Hockey goalies. His 34 saves tonight is the most he has made this season. It is his most since he made 38 saves against Bentley on Feb. 4 against Bentley. It is also his most saves in a shutout in his career.
  • 11 different Purple Eagles had points while both Cox and Pineo had three points each.
  • The last time Niagara won by six goals was in a 6-0 shutout of Holy Cross on Jan. 20, 2018 which was the first year Head Coach Jason Lammers was at the helm.
  • The Purple Eagles blocked 11 shots, four which were by Carlin.
  • With the road win and a road loss by Michigan, Niagara and Penn State are the only two teams in the country to be undefeated on the road in more than two games.
