Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep of Bentley

Waltham, Mass.—The Niagara Hockey team completed the weekend sweep of Bentley by winning Saturday night 4-2 on the road.
Game Recap
First Period
  • The Falcons controlled the play for the first half of the period as Niagara's best chance came 5:13 into the period as Lucas Bahn hit the crossbar from the point.
  • Bentley struck first at the 7:23 mark as they scored on a two on one to score their first goal of the weekend.
  • The Purple Eagles started generating more chances as the period went on and were forced to kill of multiple penalties.
  • At the 17:31 mark of the period the Purple Eagles tied the game at one. Albin Nillson skated the puck up the wing and found Casey Carreau on the other side of the ice. The pass was perfectly placed as Carreau as he fired it into the open net. It was his third goal of the season.
  • Just 23 seconds later, Niagara wanted the lead. Jason Pineo forced a neutral zone turnover and went in two on one with Olivier Gauthier. Pineo fed the puck to Gauthier and he scored his fourth goal of the season.
  • Shortly after the Purple Eagles took the lead, Josef Mysak was given a five minute major and game misconduct for contact to the head.
  • Niagara got the locker room up 2-1 but would start the second period on the penalty kill for more than three minutes.
  • Chad Veltri made 11 saves in the opening period.
Second Period
  • The second period started out with the Purple Eagles killing off the Mysak penalty and getting back to full strength.
  • Niagara would not be at full strength much of the period as they were given three more penalties in the frame while allowing seven shots on the more than 10 minutes down a man.
  • At the 13:53 mark of the period, Bentley was given a hooking penalty, just eight seconds into the power play the Purple Eagles scored. Ryan Cox won the face off and Niagara made a couple passes. Carter Randklev who was celebrating his 23rd birthday took a shot that went short side top shelf on the goalie to make it 3-1. Cox and Noah Carlin picked up assists on the play.
  • The Purple Eagles held the lead after 40 minutes despite being outshot 24-11, they killed off six power plays in the first two periods.
Third Period
  • The pressure was on from Bentley in the third period as they peppered the Purple Eagles with shots. The Niagara defensemen blocked shot after shot to limit the scoring chances.
  • Bentley did make it a one goal game at the 17:24 mark of the third period.
  • Shortly after the Falcons scored they took a cross checking penalty to give the Purple Eagles the power play.
  • Despite being down a man, Bentley pulled their goal with 1:15 left in regulation. Just one second after the power play ended, Niagara scored on the empty net to close out the game. Carreau forced a turnover and cleared it to Bentley zone. Albin Nilsson was the closest player to the puck and skated it into the empty cage to make it 4-2.
Niagara Notes
  • Niagara was 6-6 on the penalty kill and raised their penalty killing percentage by five points, they have killed 27 of 36 power plays.
  • The Purple Eagles went 1-3 on the power play and are now 7-27 on the power play.
  • Veltri allowed just two goals this weekend on 67 shots. He now has a 2.70 goals against average and .914 save percentage.
  • Cox and Pineo led the Purple Eagles with four points while Cox and Carreau both had two goals.
  • 13 different players notched points in the two game sweep with seven players having multiple points.
  • It is the first AHA weekend sweep for Niagara since they swept Bentley last season at home. The last road regular season AHA sweep was Dec. 1-2 against Air Force in the 2017-18 season.

  • Niagara has next weekend off before hosting an exhibition game against the US National Team Development Program on Nov. 18. The next night they host St. Lawrence for a non-conference game.
