Volleyball Sweeps Manhattan at Home

Niagara University, N.Y.—The Niagara Volleyball team won in straight sets on Sunday afternoon as they hosted Manhattan at the Gallagher Center.
Game Recap
First Set
  • Manhattan jumped out to a 4-1 lead after they had the first serve but the Purple Eagles came back and tied it at six after an ace from Lexi Bapst.
  • As the teams figured each other out they traded points and after 23 points it was 12-11 Niagara. The Purple Eagles then went on a huge run winning the next 11 points to make it 23-11.
  • Manhattan scored twice more in the set but could not make a comeback as they fell 25-13.
  • In the opening set Liana Tolliver led the team with four kills. Casey Brown dished out a set high 10 assists as there was only one lead change in the set.
Second Set
  • Once again in the second set the Jaspers jumped out to a 4-1 lead, the Purple Eagles responded by tying the set at five after the opening 10 points.
  • Niagara was the first to hit 15 points as they led 15-10 after 25 points.
  • The Purple Eagles took 10 of the next 14 points to win the set 25-14.
  • In the second set Niagara notched three aces and had two blocks.
  • Niagara also had a hitting percentage of .194 in the set compared to -.056 from Manhattan.
Third Set
  • The Purple Eagles flipped the script to start the third set as they jumped out to a 3-1 lead after a pair of kills from Lexi Bapst and Allie Simpson.
  • After the first 10 points Niagara led 7-3, they would not trail in the whole set.
  • Niagara took a 17-9 lead after back-to-back aces from Katie Jacobs.
  • The fourth set was dominated by the Purple Eagles as they had 11 kills and a hitting percentage of .423.
  • The Purple and White also had five aces in the set
Niagara Notes
  • Niagara had 11 blocks in the match which was led by Laryssa Imbuzeiro who had five for the Purple Eagles. Tiana Allen, Kelly McArthur, and Allie Simpson all had blocks as well.
  • Casey Brown led the team with 20 assists, it was her 10th match this season in which she had 20 or more assists.
  • Manhattan had just 17 kills in the match, that is the lowest amount of kills that the Purple Eagles gave up in match this season. They also gave up just 23 points which is also the lowest.
  • The Purple Eagles finished with a .300 hitting percentage which is the highest they have had all season.
  • Bapst led the Purple Eagles with eight kills while eight of 10 Purple Eagles recorded kills.

  • The Purple Eagles are back on the road next weekend as they play Saint Peter's on Friday and Rider on Saturday. Both games are slated for 1 PM starts.
