Niagara Hockey Comes Back to Beat Mercyhurst on the Road

Erie, Pa.—The Niagara Hockey team earned three points over the Mercyhurst Lakers on the road with a 3-2 come from behind win on the road.
Game Recap
First Period
  • Last night it was the Purple Eagles that struck early in the first but it was the Lakers who scored first on Saturday.
  • Despite the Purple Eagles dominating in the shot column, the Lakers doubled their lead at the 13:43 mark of the opening period.
  • After gaining the lead the Lakers started to control play for the rest of the period and ended up outshooting the Purple Eagles 11-10 in opening 20.
  • In the faceoff dot, the Purple Eagles dominated by winning 16 of 23 faceoffs.
Second Period
  • Coming out of the locker the Purple Eagles went on the attack. Just 1:24 into the middle frame Albin Nilsson scored his first of the season. The Lakers were attempting to breakout and Casey Carreau laid a big check and the puck found Nilsson's stick, Nilsson made no mistake and ripped it into the net.
  • Niagara wasn't done in the middle period, they tied the game at the 7:58 mark. Christian Gorscak tipped in his first of the year on a point shot from Jonathan Ziskie. The assist by Ziskie was his first collegiate point.
  • After erasing a two goal lead, the Purple Eagles weren't done as they took the lead at the 10:52 mark of the period. After a faceoff win, Josef Mysak fed the puck to Ryan Naumovski and he took a shot that was saved. The rebound bounced to Jason Pineo and he deflected it into the open net.
  • The second period was all Purple Eagles as they outshot Mercyhurst 23-4 in the frame and won 14 of 25 faceoffs.
Third Period
  • After gaining the lead in the second period the Purple Eagles did not let off the gas pedal as they generated multiple scoring chances.
  • Even with the lead the Purple Eagles outshot Mercyhurst 10-7 in the third period. They also won 12 of 16 faceoffs in the period.
  • With just over 90 seconds remaining in regulation, Mercyhurst pulled their goalie, but Niagara controlled play and kept the puck away from the Lakers.
Niagara Notes
  • Naumovski skated in his 100th career game tonight for the Purple Eagles. In his career he has 15 goals and 43 assists in the 100 games.
  • Chad Veltri made 20 saves as he picked up his third win of the season.
  • Niagara took just one penalty in the game and allowed just one shot on the lone powerplay.
  • In the game, Niagara outshot Mercyhurst 43-22, the 43 shots is a season high for the Purple Eagles.
  • Seven different Purple Eagles recorded points on the night with two players scoring their first goals of the season.
Up Next
  • The Purple Eagles go on the road next weekend to face Bentley on Friday and Saturday night. Following the weekend series, Niagara isn't in action again on Nov. 18 when they host the USNTDP in an exhibition at Dwyer Arena.
