Purple Eagles Fall To MAAC-Leading Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Niagara (7-8, 2-4 MAAC) fell to defending MAAC champions Iona (14-3, 6-0 MAAC), 78-55, on Sunday afternoon.

Game Recap
First Half
  • The Gaels went on a 12-3 run to open the game, but a triple from Marcus Hammond cut their lead to six points, 12-6, with about 14 and a half minutes remaining in the half.
  • Another 3-pointer from Hammond kept the Purple Eagles within six, 15-9.
  • Trailing by 11, 20-9, a little over halfway through the first 20 minutes of play, Justin Roberts sank a triple to put NU back within single digits of the lead, 20-12.
  • Back-to-back 3-pointers from Sam Iorio and Noah Thomasson cut the Iona lead to five points, 23-18, with about eight minutes to go in the first half.
  • Jumpers from Greg Kuakumensah and Hammond kept NU within five, 27-22, but the Gaels led by 10 at the half, 36-26.
Second Half
  • Buckets from Roberts and Thomasson to open the second half left Niagara down by just six points, 36-30.
  • The Gaels got ahead by 13 points, 43-30, but another trey from Hammond and a bucket from Rob Brown III put Niagara back within eight points of the lead, 43-35.
  • Another 3-pointer from Hammond left NU trailing by just seven points, 47-40, with a little over 12 minutes left on the clock.
  • Iona once again took a 10-point advantage, 50-40, but four points from Jordan Cintron cut the lead back to just six points, 50-44.
  • The Gaels, however, began to pull away and led the Purple Eagles, 67-51, with about four and a half minutes to go.
  • Kuakumensah and Touba Traore scored the final points of the game for NU and the Gaels won the first game of the season series, 78-55.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Hammond led the Purple Eagles in scoring with 17 points. He also brought down five rebounds.
  • Thomasson added 11 points and dished out a team-high five assists.
  • Cintron was just short of a double-double with nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds. He also led the team in steals with two.
  • Iorio brought down six rebounds and Kuakumensah added six points.
