Niagara Downs Siena, 3-1

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (5-6, 2-0 MAAC) defeated the Siena Saints (0-12, 0-2 MAAC), 3-1 (25-18, 25-15, 21-25, 25-20) on Sunday to sweep their first conference weekend.

Match Recap
First Set
  • The Purple Eagles and the Saints were tied eight times to begin the set. A kill from Laryssa Imbuzeiro and an attack error from the Saints put the Purple Eagles in the lead, 11-9.
  • The Saints took a one-point lead, 14-13, but NU earned three straight points to reclaim the lead, 16-14.
  • Up by one, 17-16, kills from Jaycie Roberts and Mary Redl extended the Niagara lead to three, 19-16.
  • A solo block and a kill from Taylor Allen helped keep the Purple Eagles in the lead, 22-17.
  • The Purple Eagles allowed the Saints one more point. A kill from Jessica Streuer and an ace from Casey Brown secured the 25-18 first set victory.
Second Set
  • Back-to-back kills from Redl opened the set for the Purple Eagles.
  • A kill from Redl and a block from Redl and Imbuzeiro gave Niagara a three-point lead, 10-7.
  • Leading 15-11, the Purple Eagles went on a 5-0 run, including a kill and an ace from Roberts and a kill from Jenna Vogen, to extend their lead, 20-11.
  • Niagara allowed the Saints just four more points in the set, winning set two, 25-15, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Third Set
  • The Purple Eagles went on a 4-0 run to open the set, including another kill from Redl and an ace from Roberts.
  • The Saints soon went on a 4-0 run of their own to tie the score, 5-5.
  • A kill from Kelly McArthur and an error from the Saints put Niagara back in the lead, 8-6.
  • Niagara and Siena went back and forth and, with the score tied 10-10, the Saints scored four straight points to claim the lead, 14-10.
  • A kill and an ace from Imbuzeiro tied things up once again, 15-15.
  • The Saints got ahead, 21-18, but a kill from Roberts put Niagara back within two, 21-19.
  • Siena, however, held on to win the third set, 25-21.
Fourth Set
  • The Purple Eagles and the Saints once again went back and forth to open the set. With a one-point lead, 12-11, NU went on a 5-0 run, including three kills from Redl, to extend its lead, 17-11.
  • Siena scored once before the Purple Eagles scored four straight points, which included two more kills from Redl and one from Cassie Seminoff, to take a nine-point advantage, 21-12.
  • Up by seven, 24-17, after a kill from Allen, the Saints earned three straight points to cut Niagara's lead to four, 24-20, but a kill from Roberts closed out the set and secured a 3-1 victory for the Purple Eagles.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Roberts recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 15 digs. She had a team-high two aces.
  • Streuer had her second straight double-double with 11 digs and a team-high 18 assists.
  • Redl led the team in kills with 14. She also added nine digs.
  • Amanda Darling had a team-best 20 digs.
  • Brown added 17 assists.
