POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. –
Shea Swartwout's goal with 16 seconds remaining lifted the Purple Eagles to a comeback 12-11 win over the Marist Red Foxes on Wednesday afternoon for their fourth straight victory.
SYNOPSIS
Trailing 11-6 with 12 minutes remaining, the Purple Eagles finished the game on a 6-0 run to escape Poughkeepsie with a win.
Shea Swartwout stared the rally with a woman-up goal with 10:37 minutes on the clock with
Rachel Crane following 20 seconds later with her second. Goals one minute apart by
Lexi Braniecki and Swartwout brought Niagara within one goal, 11-10, with 5:38 remaining. Swartwout went from scorer to a helper for the game-tying goal. On a free position attempt, Swartwout found
Audrey Fithall cutting to the net to score the tying goal at 11-11 with 3:34 left.
The Purple Eagles, then, gained possession in the final minute after a Marist turnover. After two keeping possession twice after wide shots, Swartwout managed to collect the loose ball in front of the net and scored the game winner.
There were four lead changes in a tightly contested first half. The game's first goal come at the 21:54 mark from Swartwout, who also tied the game at 2-2. Goals by Crane and
Alexandra Leo gave Niagara a 5-4 lead with eight minutes left in the half. The Red Foxes scored with five minutes left as the half ended in a 5-5 tie.
After a 90-minute weather delay, the Red Foxes scored four straight goals to open the second half. Marist made it 11-6 before Niagara reeled off six straight goals.
EAGLE'S EYE ON…
- Shea Swartwout collected a career-high seven points with a game-high five goals and a team-high two assists. Swartwout added three ground balls to share game-high honors.
- Lexi Braniecki netted a hat-trick for the second time this season.
- Rachel Crane scored two goals and added an assist.
- Maren Geiger made five saves after coming in midway through the second half.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Niagara's four-game win streak is the longest since the 2016 season.
- Niagara halts a three-game skid in the series for only the program's second win in the last 17 meetings.
- The 14 saves are tied for the most this season.
