Purple Eagles Split Season Series With The Griffs

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Niagara split a doubleheader with the Griffs on Wednesday to split the four-game season series.

Game Recap
  • Canisius scored first in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • An RBI single from Spencer Marcus in the bottom of the third tied things up, 1-1.
  • In the top of the sixth inning, the Griffs reclaimed the lead, 2-1, scoring on a Niagara error.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Benny Serrano singled to right field, scoring Cole O'Connor to tie the score, 2-2. Michael Gabriele then singled up the middle to plate Serrano for the game-winning run.

Eagle's Eye On
  • O'Connor, Serrano, Gabriele, Marcus, Cole Tucker and Matt Zaremba each had one hit.
  • O'Connor, Tucker and Zaremba each had a hit for extra bases.
  • Serrano had one stolen base.
  • Jacob Bruning (2-1) earned the win. He fanned six and allowed five hits and two earned runs in 6.1 innings pitched.
  • Matt Grace earned his first save of the season. He gave up just one hit in 0.2 innings pitched.

Game Recap
  • An RBI single from Serrano in the bottom of the first inning put NU on the board and gave the Purple Eagles the early 1-0 lead over the Griffs.
  • The Griffs took the lead in the top of the second, 3-1.
  • Cansius had a monster fourth inning, adding nine runs to extend its lead, 12-1.
  • The Griffs scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to take a 14-run lead, 15-1.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Max Giordano grounded out to short, giving Brady Desjardins time to score a run for the Purple Eagles, but Niagara still trailed by 13, 15-2.
  • Canisius scored five runs in the seventh inning to earn the 20-2 victory.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Dawson Bailey led the Purple Eagles with two hits, while Serrano had one.
  • One of Bailey's hits was a double.
  • Bailey and Serrano each had one stolen base.
  • Chaz DeLuca (2-1) took the loss on the mound. He struck out five and gave up five hits and five earned runs in 3.0 innings pitched.
