Purple Eagles Split Doubleheader With Iona

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles softball team split its opening day doubleheader with Iona on Saturday.

Game Recap
  • Niagara got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when Kelsey Harrigan stole home plate.
  • Iona took the lead in the third inning, 3-1, after an RBI single and a two RBI single.
  • The Purple Eagles tied things up, 3-3, in the fourth frame after a two RBI double from Riley Crum.
  • The Gaels reclaimed the lead, 6-3, in the fifth inning after an RBI single and two-run homerun.
  • In the seventh inning, Heather Haberman doubled up the middle to score Maggie Vesneske and Harrigan. Rachel Funk then reached base on an error and advanced to second base, giving Rebecca Gozzo time to cross home plate to tie the score, 6-6.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, a three-run homer and an RBI double from the Gaels put them ahead of the Purple Eagles, 10-6. Iona held Niagara scoreless in the bottom of the inning to earn the win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Harrigan, Haberman and Crum led the Purple Eagles in hits with two each. Haberman had two doubles.
  • Crum and Haberman both batted in two runs.
  • Vesneske had a team-best two stolen bases.
  • Karsen Cotton started in the circle. She struck out four and allowed six earned runs in 5.0 innings pitched. Julia Thompson took the loss; she struck out four and gave up three earned runs in 3.0 innings pitched.

Game Recap
  • Iona scored its lone run of the game in the top of the first off an RBI double.
  • The Purple Eagles had a strong third inning. An RBI double from Vesneske put NU on the board. A sacrifice fly from Haberman scored Harrigan, followed by an RBI single from Funk. Shayna Myshrall scored as well to give Niagara a 4-1 lead.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Haberman homered, sending three runs across the plate.
  • Niagara's defense remained steady in the seventh to keep the Gaels off the board and the Purple Eagles earned the 7-1 victory.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Haberman had a team-best two hits and four RBIs.
  • Harrigan and Myshrall each scored two runs.
  • Crum earned the win in the circle. She struck out 10 and allowed just one earned run in 6.2 innings pitched.
