NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Niagara was defeated by Iona in both games a doubleheader on Sunday to close out its season series with the Gaels.

Game Recap
  • The first three and a half innings were a defensive battle between the Purple Eagles and the Gaels.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Shayna Myshrall came up big for the Purple Eagles, hitting a two-run homerun to give them a 2-0 lead.
  • A solo homerun from the Gaels in the top of the fifth frame halved Niagara's lead, 2-1.
  • In the top of the sixth, an RBI single from the Gaels tied things up, 2-2. Then, with two runners on base, the Iona batter reached base on an error from Niagara's shortstop, giving enough time for the game-winning run to cross the plate.

Game Recap
  • Niagara started off strong in game two. In the bottom of the first inning, an RBI single from Maggie Vesneske put the Purple Eagles on the board. Rachel Funk then blasted a two-run homerun over the left field fence to give Niagara an early 3-0 lead.
  • The Purple Eagle bats continued to be hot in the second inning. Riley Crum hit a two-run homerun and Myshrall smacked a two-RBI double to center field. Niagara led the Gaels, 7-0, after two innings.
  • Two doubles, sending a total of three runs home, from the Gaels in the top of the third inning cut Niagara's lead to four, 7-3.
  • The Gaels scored once in the sixth and three times in the seventh to tie the score, 7-7, and force the game into extra innings.
  • An RBI double in the top of the eighth gave Iona a 9-7 lead. The Purple Eagles were retired in order in the bottom of the inning and the Gaels earned the win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Funk and Vesneske led the Purple Eagles at the plate with three hits each.
  • Madison Rastello added two hits.
  • Crum, Funk and Myshrall each batted in two runs.
  • Harrigan, Vesneske and Rastello each had one stolen base.
  • Crum started in the circle. She struck out four and gave up three earned runs in 5.0 innings pitched.
  • Cotton (0-2) took the loss. She struck out three batters and allowed four earned runs in 3.0 innings pitched.
