NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The Golden Griffins scored five unanswered goals in the third period to take the first game of the home-and-home series with the Purple Eagles.
 
1st Period
• The first period came to a close with neither team finding the back of the net.
• Niagara only registered three shots on goal in the frame, compared to seven for Canisius.
• The final minutes of the period saw 4-on-4 hockey as Niagara and Canisius were called for their first penalties of the game.
 
2nd Period
• The Purple Eagles registered seven shots on net, however, Niagara was unable to beat the Canisius goalie.
• The Purple Eagles killed two Golden Griffin power-plays in the period.
• Niagara had one power-play attempt in the period.
 
3rd Period
• The Purple Eagles were the first to score in the third period, taking a 1-0 lead after Ryan Cox scored 1:10 into the stanza.
• Niagara held the 1-0 margin for the next five-plus minutes before Canisius tied the game at one on the first of Jami Virtanen's two goals.
• Virtanen scored his second goal before the halfway mark of the period, giving the Griffs a 2-1 lead.
• Canisius would go on to add three more goals, including an empty netter and power-play goal to claim victory over Niagara, 5-1.
 
Game Notes
• Niagara took a total of 39 shots in the contest, 16 of which were on target.
• The Niagara penalty kill finished the game 1-for-8, improving to 55-for-65 on the season.
• Cox's goal was the juniors fifth of the season, tying him with Walker Sommer and Ludwig Stenlund for the team lead.
Croix Evingson was credited with the assist on the Niagara goal, giving him seven on the year.
Chad Veltri made a total of 30 saves on 34 shots faced.

• Niagara will look to rebound in game two of the series tomorrow night. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. from the HarborCenter in downtown Buffalo, N.Y.
