NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Niagara earned a 2-1 victory Saturday night to split the weekend series with Mercyhurst. Â

1st Period
• Senior
Eric Cooley opened the Purple Eagles scoring as he found the back of the net on a rebound midway through the first period.
Chris Harpur and
Luke Edgerton were credited with helpers on the goal.
• Niagara generated 22 shots and 13 shots on goal in the opening period. The Purple Eagles also controlled the faceoff, winning 15 of the frames 23 draws.
• The Niagara goal was scored on one of its two power-play opportunities. The team now hasÂ

2nd Period
• The second period saw Mercyhurst took a total of 25 shots, compared to just 15 for the Purple Eagles. The Lakers held the edge in shots on goal, 11-10.
• Mercyhurst went on the power play three times in the stanza; however, Niagara was able to thwart each attempt and hold the score at 1-0 when the frame came to a close.Â
• The Purple Eagles had two power-play opportunities of their own but were unable to extend the lead.

3rd Period
• Niagara extended its lead to 2-0 when junior forward
Ludwig Stenlund rifled one past the Mercyhurst keeper from the right-side faceoff circle.
• Harpur was awarded his second assist on the goal, while
Jared Brandt was credited with his first game.
• The Lakers got one back later on in the period when Steven Ipri took advantage of a Niagara turnover in front of the net to cut the lead in half.
• Mercyhurst would empty the net with over two minutes left in an attempt to tie the contest, but Niagara was able to hold off the Lakers and hold on to the 2-1 win.

Game Notes
•
Chad Veltri finished the game with 25 saves and picked up his first win of the season.
• Cooley's goal was the Pittsburgh, Pa., natives third of the season, while Stenlund picked up his fifth of the season.
• Harpur registered his fifth and sixth assists on the season and 31st and 32nd of his career.Â
• Saturday's win was Niagara's first victory since Jan. 3 against Air Force.

• Niagara will play a midweek contest with RIT on Wednesday night. The game will take place in Rochester and is scheduled for a 5 p.m. puck drop.
