Purple Eagles Split Season Series With Crusaders

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Purple Eagles (3-9-2, 3-3-2-1 AHA) fell to Holy Cross (4-13-1, 3-6-1 AHA), 3-2, on Saturday to split the season series.

Game Recap
First Period
  • The Crusaders scored a little over one minute into the period to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Zac Herrmann, Lars Rodne, Noah Carlin, Christian Gorscak, Shane Ott and Josef Mysak all had opportunities for NU, but none of their shots found their mark.
  • A little under 10 minutes into the period, Niagara was on the power play. Luke Edgerton created a chance, but his shot was blocked.
  • At 14:56, Christian Gorscak evened the score at 1-1. He was assisted by Ott and Rodne.
  • Edgerton, Herrmann and Ott had chances for NU in the remainder of the period, but the Purple Eagles and the Crusaders remained tied, 1-1, going into the first intermission.
Second Period
  • Chris Harpur, Gorscak and Ryan Cox had early opportunities for the Purple Eagles in the second period.
  • A little under six minutes into the period, the Purple Eagles were on the power play. Ryan Naumovski scored, assisted by Albin Nilsson and Ott, to put Niagara in the lead, 2-1.
  • Holy Cross tied the score, 2-2, about 11 and a half minutes into the second period.
  • The Purple Eagles created a lot of opportunities in the remainder of the period, taking six shots on goal, but they were all stopped by the Crusaders' goaltender and the teams were knotted at two goals apiece going into the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Third Period
  • Jack Zielinski, Jordan Wishman, Naumovski, Edgerton and Brandon Stanley had chances for Niagara in the first five and a half minutes of play, but none found the back of the net.
  • About 15 minutes into the period, the Crusaders scored on a power play to take the lead, 3-2.
  • Herrmann, Jason Pineo and Harpur had opportunities for the Purple Eagles in the final minutes of the period, but the Crusaders came away with the win, 3-2.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Herrmann led the Purple Eagles with four shots, while Naumovski and Gorscak each added three.
  • Harpur, Edgerton and Ott each blocked two shots.
  • Chad Veltri (3-4-1) made 18 saves.
  • The Purple Eagles held the advantage in shots on goal, 29-21, and in face-off wins, 36-24.
