NU Defeats Canisius To Split Battle Of The Bridge Series

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (12-13, 9-7 MAAC) defeated Canisius (10-15, 10-6 MAAC), 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21), on Tuesday.

Match Recap
First Set
  • Niagara and Canisius were tied, 4-4, when Niagara scored four straight points, including kills from Mary Redl and Jaycie Roberts, to take an 8-4 lead.
  • The Griffs came within one, 8-7, but NU went on a 7-1 run, including two kills from Roberts, one from Redl and a block by Cassie Seminoff, to extend its lead, 15-8.
  • Canisius went on a 5-0 run, but Niagara was still in the lead, 15-13.
  • A Canisius error, an ace from Roberts and a kill from Seminoff extended the Purple Eagles' lead to five points, 18-13.
  • Niagara allowed the Griffs just five more points as the Purple Eagles won set one, 25-18.
Second Set
  • The Purple Eagles and the Griffs were again tied early, 5-5, but two kills from Taylor Allen and one from Roberts put Niagara in the lead, 8-5.
  • Niagara and Canisius traded points and, leading by one, 14-13, a block by Allie Simpson and Kelly McArthur and a kill from Simpson gave NU a 16-13 lead over the Griffs.
  • Canisius came within one point of the Purple Eagles, 18-17, but Niagara earned five straight points, including two more kills from Seminoff, to extend its lead, 23-17.
  • The Griffs scored one point, but a kill from Redl and an ace from Laryssa Imbuzeiro earned NU the 25-18 set two victory.
Third Set
  • The Griffs went on a 7-1 run to open the third set, but Niagara answered with five straight points, including a kill and an ace from Imbuzeiro, a solo block from Redl and a kill from Seminoff, to leave the Purple Eagles down by just one point, 7-6.
  • Canisius scored five of the next six points to take a five-point lead, 12-7, but five straight points from the Purple Eagles, including a solo block and a kill from Roberts and a kill from McArthur tied things up, 12-12.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Griffs went back and forth for the remainder of the set but Canisius won the third set, 25-23.
Fourth Set
  • Ahead by one, 6-5, a block by McArthur, two aces from Redl and a kill from Taylor Allen extended the Niagara lead, 11-5.
  • The Griffs scored nine of the following 11 points, to take a one-point lead over the Purple Eagles, 14-13.
  • A kill and a block from Seminoff put Niagara back ahead, 15-14.
  • The Griffs tied the score, 15-15, but Niagara scored three straight points to reclaim the lead, 18-15.
  • A kill from Redl and an ace from Seminoff helped NU to a 21-16 lead over the Griffs.
  • A kill from Roberts earned NU the match point as the Purple Eagles defeated the Griffs, 3-1.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Roberts recorded her 16th double-double of the season with 20 digs and a team-high 17 kills.
  • Redl also had a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs.
  • Amanda Darling led the team in digs with 33.
  • Jessica Streuer had a team-best 25 assists for the Purple Eagles, while McArthur added 15.
  • Seminoff added eight kills and 15 digs and led the team in total blocks with three.
  • Imbuzeiro had a team-high three aces.
