JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Purple Eagles (13-13, 10-7 MAAC) defeated Saint Peter's (2-27, 1-16 MAAC), 3-2 (26-24, 15-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-5), on Saturday to sweep their season series with the Peacocks.
Match Recap
First Set
- Kills from Jaycie Roberts and Mary Redl and aces from Roberts and Laryssa Imbuzeiro helped Niagara to a 5-3 lead over the Peacocks.
- The Peacocks scored four straight points to take the lead, 7-5, but NU answered with four points of its own, including a solo block from Redl, kills from Cassie Seminoff and Roberts and an ace from Jessica Streuer, to get back ahead, 9-7.
- The Purple Eagles and the Peacocks went back and forth and were tied, 12-12, when an error from Saint Peter's and an ace from Seminoff put Niagara back in the lead, 14-12.
- The score was tied 11 more times in the set. With Saint Peter's ahead by one, 24-23, the Purple Eagles scored three straight points, including two kills from Redl and one from Kelly McArthur, to close the set and earn the 26-24 win.
Second Set
- The Peacocks took a 3-0 lead to open the set, but kills from Roberts and McArthur, an ace from Seminoff and a block by McArthur and Imbuzeiro put NU in the lead, 4-3.
- Saint Peter's went on a 6-1 run to get back ahead, 9-5.
- A kill from Redl, a block by Redl and Taylor Allen and an ace from Imbuzeiro put NU within one point of the lead, 9-8.
- Down by two, 13-11, a kill from Roberts brought Niagara back within one, 13-12.
- Roberts had two more kills in the set, but Saint Peter's remained in control, taking set two, 25-15, to tie the match, 1-1.
Third Set
- The Purple Eagles and Peacocks went back and forth with Saint Peter's taking a one-point lead, 9-8.
- A service error from the Peacocks and kills from Seminoff and Roberts put Niagara in the lead, 11-9.
- Down by one, 16-15, kills from Streuer and Allen reclaimed the lead for NU, 17-16.
- The Peacocks, however, allowed the Purple Eagles just three more points in the set. They won set three, 25-20, and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
Fourth Set
- A block by Allen and Jenna Vogen and kills from Vogen and Redl helped NU to an early 4-1 lead over the Peacocks.
- With the score tied, 9-9, the Purple Eagles earned five straight points, including two kills from Roberts, one each from Allen and Vogen and an ace from Streuer, to reclaim the lead, 14-9.
- The teams went back and forth and with the score tied once again, 19-19, an error from the Peacocks, a solo block from Allen and a kill from Roberts put NU ahead, 22-19.
- One kill from Roberts and two kills from Redl helped Niagara to a 25-22 set four win to tie the match, 2-2.
Fifth Set
- The Purple Eagles scored four straight points, including two kills from Redl and one from Vogen, to open the fifth set.
- Niagara allowed Saint Peter's one point before going on a 6-0 run, which included three kills from Redl and one each from Vogen and Allie Simpson, to extend its lead, 10-1.
- Ahead by eight, 13-5, an attack error from the Peacocks and a kill from Roberts iced the five-set victory for the Purple Eagles.
Eagle's Eye On
- Redl, Roberts and Streuer all recorded double-doubles; Redl had a team-high 20 kills and also added 14 digs, Roberts had 16 kills and 27 digs and Streuer had 13 digs and a team-high 38 assists.
- Amanda Darling led the Purple Eagles in digs with 35.
- Imbuzeiro, Seminoff and Streuer each had two aces.
- Allen led the team in blocking with five total blocks.
- Seminoff added 10 digs and Vogen had six kills.
