BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (11-13, 8-7 MAAC) fell to Canisius (10-14, 10-5 MAAC), 3-1 (21-25, 14-25, 25-23, 16-25), in the first installment of the Battle of the Bridge on Thursday.
Match Recap
First Set
- The Griffs took an 11-4 lead over NU, but kills from Jaycie Roberts and Mary Redl put the Purple Eagles within five points of the lead, 11-6.
- Canisius took a 15-8 lead, but Niagara went on a 6-0 run, including two kills from Redl and one from Jacki Schmitz, to trail by just one, 15-14.
- The Purple Eagles and the Griffs went back and forth. The Griffs took a four-point lead, 21-17, but a kill from Roberts put NU back within three, 21-18.
- Trailing by five, 23-18, kills from Laryssa Imbuzeiro and Redl put the Purple Eagles down by just three points, 23-20.
- The Griffs, however, held on to win the set, 25-21.
Second Set
- The Griffs scored six straight points to open the second set, but the Purple Eagles answered with five straight points, including two kills from Taylor Allen, one from Redl and a block by Allen and Redl, to leave them trailing by just one point, 6-5.
- Canisius went on a 6-1 run, but a kill from Redl and two attack errors from the Griffs kept the Purple Eagles within three, 12-9.
- The Griffs score eight of the next nine points to take a 20-10 lead over NU.
- Back-to-back kills from Roberts put the Griffs lead back to single digits, 20-12.
- Canisius, however, allowed NU just two more points in the set and took a 2-0 match lead.
Third Set
- The lead changed five times early in the set and the Purple Eagles took a one-point lead, 7-6.
- The Griffs went on a 7-0 run to claim the lead, 13-7.
- The Purple Eagles answered with six straight points, which included kills from Roberts and Redl, solo blocks from Kelly McArthur and Roberts, and a block by Allen and McArthur, to tie the score, 13-13.
- The Griffs scored three points to take the lead, 16-13, but an error from Canisius and a kill from Schnitz put Niagara within one, 16-15.
- Trailing by three, 19-16, kills from Redl and Schmitz and an ace from Amanda Darling tied the score, 19-19.
- Canisius took a one-point lead, 21-20, but a kill from Redl and two from Roberts put Niagara back on top, 23-21.
- The Purple Eagles held on to win the set, 25-23.
Fourth Set
- The Griffs went on a 9-0 run to open the fourth set and soon extended their lead to 11 points, 15-4.
- The Purple Eagles earned four of the next five points to cut the Canisius lead in half, 16-8.
- Canisius took a 10-point advantage, 19-9. A kill from Lexi Bapst and an error from the Griffs put Niagara back within eight, 19-11.
- Bapst, Redl, Roberts and Allen had kills in the remainder of the set, but the Griffs maintained control, winning the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-1.
Eagle's Eye On
- Redl had a double-double with 16 digs and a team-high 13 kills. She also led the team in blocking with three block assists.
- Roberts recorded her 16th double-double of the season with 12 kills and 14 digs.
- Jessica Streuer also had a double-double with 12 digs and a team-high 17 assists.
- Darling led the team in digs with 26.
- Cassie Seminoff added 10 digs.
