Volleyball Falls To Iona In Five Sets

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles (6-9, 3-3 MAAC) were defeated by the Iona Gaels (4-10, 2-4 MAAC) in five sets on Sunday.

Match Recap
First Set
  • The Purple Eagles got off to an early 7-4 lead, which included three kills and an ace from Jaycie Roberts.
  • The Gaels went on a 6-0 run to claim the lead, 10-7.
  • Trailing by three, 12-9, the Purple Eagles earned three points, including another kill from Roberts, to tie the score, 12-12.
  • A block from Taylor Allen and Mary Redl and a kill from Roberts put NU back on top, 15-14.
  • The Gaels, however, allowed the Purple Eagles just three more points and won the first set, 25-18.
Second Set
  • The Purple Eagles and the Gaels went back and forth to open the second set and, down by just one point, two kills from Roberts and an Iona attack error put NU in the lead, 10-8.
  • Once again down by one point, 15-14, the Purple Eagles went on a 7-0 run, including two kills from Roberts, one from Redl and a block by Roberts and Laryssa Imbuzeiro, to take a 21-15 advantage over Iona.
  • Three straight points, capped on each end by kills from Roberts, gave Niagara an eight-point lead, 24-16.
  • The Gaels came back within six, 24-18, but a kill from Allie Simpson earned NU the 25-18 set two win and tied the match, 1-1.
Third Set
  • The Gaels went on a 7-1 run to open the third set, but kills from Roberts, Allen and Redl and attack error by Iona left Niagara trailing by just two points, 7-5.
  • Kills from Lexi Bapst and Roberts brought the Purple Eagles within one point of the Gaels, 8-7, and kills from Jenna Vogen and Redl soon tied the score, 9-9.
  • Iona got ahead by six, 19-13, but a solo block from Allen and a kill from Vogen put NU within four points of the lead, 19-15.
  • The Gaels, however, went on a 6-1 run to close the set and took set three, 25-16.
Fourth Set
  • The Purple Eagles took the lead, 9-3, with an early 4-0 run in the fourth set, including kills from Redl and Roberts and two blocks by Imbuzeiro and Roberts.
  • A kill from Roberts and a block by Allen and Roberts extended Niagara's lead over the Gaels, 11-4.
  • Two kills from Vogen and Redl and one from Allen kept NU comfortably ahead, 16-7.
  • Ahead by seven, 19-12, a kill from Brown and back-to-back blocks from Allen and Vogen extended the Niagara lead to 11 points, 23-12.
  • The Purple Eagles allowed the Gaels just one more point before kills from Vogen and Redl earned NU the 25-13 set four victory and tied the match, 2-2.
Fifth Set
  • Niagara took an early one-point lead over the Gaels, 3-2, after kills from Jessica Streuer, Allen and Redl.
  • The Gaels tied things up, 3-3, but Niagara answered with a 5-0 run, including a kill from Vogen and a block by Simpson and Imbuzeiro, to reclaim the lead, 8-3.
  • The Purple Eagles led by five, 10-5, when the Gaels scored five consecutive points to tie the score once again, 10-10.
  • Down by one, 12-11, a kill from Vogen, an ace from Roberts and Iona error out Niagara back in the lead, 14-12.
  • The Gaels tied the score, 14-14, but a kill from Redl put Niagara ahead by one, 15-14.
  • Iona, however, scored the three points it needed to win the set, 17-15, and the match, 3-2.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Roberts recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 16 digs and a team-high 19 kills. She led the team in aces with two.
  • Brown also recorded a double-double with 14 assists and a team-high 21 digs.
  • Redl added 15 kills and Vogen had a career-high 10 kills.
  • Streuer led the team in assists with 19.
  • Amanda Darling added 20 digs for the Purple Eagles.
  • Allen and Imbuzeiro led the team in blocking with six total blocks each.
