NU Takes Stags To Five Sets, Roberts Surpasses 1,000 Kills

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Niagara volleyball team (9-11, 6-5 MAAC) became the first MAAC team this season to win a set against the top-ranked Fairfield Stags (17-6, 12-0 MAAC). The Purple Eagles fell to the Stags in five sets, 3-2 (25-23, 11-25, 10-25, 25-21, 15-12).

Match Recap
First Set
  • Trailing by two points early, 8-6, the Purple Eagles scored five straight points, including kills from Mary Redl and Taylor Allen, an ace from Laryssa Imbuzeiro and a block by Allen and Cassie Seminoff, to take an 11-8 lead over the Stags.
  • The Stags jumped back ahead by two, 15-13, but two kills from Jaycie Roberts and a block by Roberts and Imbuzeiro put Niagara back on top, 16-15.
  • Two kills from Redl and an attack error by Stags kept NU ahead by one, 20-19.
  • Fairfield reclaimed the lead, 21-20, but a kill from Seminoff and a block by Allen and Kelly McArthur gave Niagara back a one-point lead, 22-21.
  • The Stags tied the score, 22-22, before back-to-back kills from Redl put the Purple Eagles back in the lead, 24-22.
  • Fairfield scored one more point, but a kill from Roberts iced the 25-23 set one win for NU. It was the first set the Stags have lost in conference play.
Second Set
  • The Stags went on an 8-2 run to open the set. A kill from Roberts kept Niagara within five points of the lead, 8-3.
  • A kill from McArthur kept NU within five, 9-4.
  • The Stags began to pull away further, taking a 14-5 lead over the Purple Eagles. A kill from Redl kept Niagara within eight points of Fairfield, 14-6.
  • Roberts and Imbuzeiro each added a kill for NU in the remainder of the set, but the Stags came away with the 25-11 win to tie the match, 1-1.
Third Set
  • The Stags once again got ahead early. Kills from Seminoff and Roberts kept Niagara within six points of Fairfield, 9-3.
  • Fairfield, however, went on a 7-0 run to extend its lead, 16-3.
  • The Stags allowed the Purple Eagles just seven more points in the set, including two more kills from Roberts and one from Redl. Fairfield won set three, 25-10, to take a 2-1 match lead.
Fourth Set
  • The Purple Eagles and the Stags went back and forth to open the fourth set, with NU taking an early 9-7 lead.
  • A kill from Roberts, an attack error on the Stags and a block by Imbuzeiro and Seminoff gave Niagara a five-point lead, 12-7.
  • Ahead by one, 13-12, a kill from Redl and back-to-back errors from the Stags gave Niagara a 16-12 advantage.
  • Up by two, 17-15, after a kill from Roberts, Fairfield scored four straight points to take the lead, 19-17.
  • Trailing by just two points, 20-18, two kills from Allen and two aces from Roberts reclaimed the lead for the Purple Eagles, 22-20.
  • Niagara allowed the Stags just one more point, scoring three straight points to close out the set and tie the match, 2-2.
Fifth Set
  • Kills from Seminoff, Redl and Roberts helped the Purple Eagles to a one-point lead, 4-3, early in fifth set.
  • Fairfield scored four straight points to take the lead, 7-4.
  • Trailing by four, 10-6, kills from Seminoff and Amanda Darling put Niagara within two points of the lead, 10-8.
  • Two more kills from Roberts kept Niagara down by just two, 10-12.
  • Fairfield earned back-to-back points to take a four-point lead, 14-10.
  • A kill from Redl and an error by the Stags put NU back within two, 14-12, but Fairfield scored the final point it needed to win the set, 15-12, and the match, 3-2.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Roberts is the ninth player in program history to surpass 1,000 career kills. She recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 15 digs and a team-high 18 kills. She also led the team in aces with two.
  • Jessica Streuer also recorded a double-double with 10 digs and 14 assists.
  • Darling led the team in digs with 18.
  • McArthur recorded a career-high, and team-high, 19 assists.
  • Allen led the team in blocking with four total blocks.
  • Redl added 12 kills and nine digs.
  • Seminoff had six kills and 12 digs.
