Multiple Purple Eagles Set Career-Highs In Series Finale At PSU

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Niagara (0-4-0) was defeated by Penn State (5-1-0), 6-2, in the teams' series finale on Friday night.

Game Recap
First Period
  • Shane Ott created an early opportunity for the Purple Eagles, taking a shot in the first 10 seconds of play, but it was saved by the PSU goalie.
  • Niagara was on the power play less than 20 seconds into the period. Walker Sommer, Albin Nilsson, Ryan Naumovski and Chris Harpur all had chances for NU, but their shots did not find their target.
  • The Purple Eagles continued to pepper the Nittany Lions with shots, including two shots from Brandon Stanley and Jack Zielinski, and one each from Christian Gorscak and Mike Faulkner.
  • Niagara was on the power play again 8:12 into the period after a major penalty was called on PSU and the team continued to create scoring chances, including two strong shots from Nilsson and one each from Sommer and Harpur, but the Nittany Lions struck first, scoring a short-handed goal in the 10th minute of play to take a 1-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Harpur, Jack DeBoer, Ryan Cox, Ott and Stanley all took shots in the remaining minutes of the power play, but they were all saved.
  • Penn State scored a power play goal in the 15th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
  • In the 19th minute, Albin Nilsson scored his first goal as a Purple Eagle, cutting the Penn State lead in half, 2-1.
Second Period
  • Mike Faulkner took the first shot of the period for the Purple Eagles, but his attempt was saved by Penn State.
  • The Nittany Lions extended their lead back to two, 3-1, after scoring a little less than five minutes into the period.
  • Niagara was on the power play once again about nine minutes into the period. Sommer had two chances, but neither made it past the PSU goalie.
  • The Purple Eagles were on the power play again starting at 11:02. The team created opportunities, with shots from Sommer, Zielinski, Harpur, Faulkner and Nilsson.
  • Sommer had three more chances for NU during its next power play, but two of his shots were saved and one was blocked.
  • Stanley had the final chance of the period for the Purple Eagles, but his shot didn't find its mark and NU trailed by just two, 3-1, going into the intermission
Third Period
  • Less than three minutes into the third period, the Purple Eagles were back on the power play. Gorscak had a solid chance for NU, but the Penn State goaltender made the save.
  • Luke Edgerton took back-to-back shots for NU in the seventh minute, but both were blocked.
  • A little over seven minutes into the third period, Sommer scored for Niagara. It was his first goal of the season. He was assisted by Zac Herrmann and Jesse Pomeroy and it left the Purple Eagles down by just one, 3-2, once again.
  • Penn State, however, scored in the 14th minute to put its lead back to two goals, 4-2.
  • The Nittany Lions scored a goal on a penalty shot and an empty-net goal in the 18th minute of the third period, and came away with the 6-2 win.

Eagle's Eye On
  • Sommer led the Purple Eagles in shots on goal with seven, which is his career-high.
  • Nilsson led the team in blocked shots with three, and also added a career-high six shots on goal.
  • Jack Zielinski also set a career-high in shots on goal with four.
  • Goaltender Jake Sibell (0-2-0) made a career-high 34 saves. He recorded double-digit saves in both the second (15) and third (14) periods. 
  • Niagara had the advantage in blocked shots, 13-9, and in face-off wins, 36-34.
  • The Purple Eagles led the Nittany Lions in shots on goal in the first period, outshooting them 16-7.
